Dean was sitting in a chair outside the principal’s office, head down, legs swinging idly, when John arrived. There was blood on his lip and a hole in the knees of his new jeans.
“Hello, Dean.”
The boy looked up, bit his lip. “Dad-“
“What did I tell you about fighting in school?”
“He started it.” Dean blurted. “He said…” His throat clicked as he swallowed. “He said Mom was ugly.”
“So you beat him up?”
“Wouldn’t you?”
John sighed as he met his son’s teary but fierce gaze and knew he couldn’t lie to him.
“Yeah, I probably would.”
