It had been years since Leon had been to this particular spot, but although he had changed, in ways he had never thought possible, everything around him seemed just the same, as if caught in some sort of time capsule.
Seagulls diving for their supper called to one another, their voices blending with the roar and crash of the surf as it killed itself on the rocks below.
He glanced at D, who sat quietly beside him, legs tucked under him as he sipped his tea contentedly. The dying sun tinted his hair, face and clothes a deep red. Sometimes Leon’s chest squeezed tight just looking at him. Not that he would admit it aloud. Wild horses couldn’t drag such a confession from his lips.
Leon opened his mouth, “D…“
“Yes, Detective?”
“It’s kind of pretty out here, isn’t it?” Leon said, turning his gaze back toward the setting sun and taking a long drag on his cigarette.
D offered a small, secret smile that always made Leon wonder exactly what he could possibly be thinking. “Indeed it is, Detective. Indeed it is.”
