The problem is the content -- depending on whether it's American or British, 18th century literature can be really, really, REALLY dull. I nearly lost my mind with all the rigidly composed poetry and flavorless critical essays. Plays and novels are a touch more engaging, and then the very late 18th century period starts to get a lot better ( ... )
