Raging with Azula

Sep 20, 2010 23:23

Aang stormed down the halls, arms stiff at his sides.  He didn't want to think about the meeting.  About the war that was now looming, peering down at him, demanding more patience than he knew he could give it at the current time.  Why hadn't Zuko listened to him?  Why had he just jumped in, head first?  He was dragging his whole nation into this ( Read more... )

There is a quick rap on the door, much too polite to be Zuko or Mai. They are much too important now. Azula looks at the door curiously, waiting for her visitor.

When the doors open to reveal the Avatar, she is taken back by shock but does not show it. Her eyebrow raises and she fixes a false-friendly smile. Part of her was thankful to have a visitor, even if it was Aang but she wouldn’t let it show aside from a mild look of amusement. He’s irritated. She smirked, glancing briefly to where her mother had been standing but now was filled with empty space. “Avatar. To what do I owe the honor this time?” Her voice was slow, drawling.

She nods, mostly to herself. They should fear her. But what he said still has her jittery. "You think I'm weak." Of course.

Why shouldn't he? She'd been defeated by the water tribe peasant! She's there, in the prison. Maybe she is weak. Azula looks to the side, trying as hard as she can to keep her eyes from filling. She doesn't want to be as weak as he thinks she is.

"Fire flakes." Her voice is quiet and she will not look at him. "Does--" She does not finish her sentence. Doesn't ask if her father knows how she failed.

"You're not weak," he replied, still wearing his sad smile. He wanted to tell her she'd just lost her spark, her edge, and she'd find it again if she were able to overcome... whatever it was she had to overcome. But he held his tongue. That was something she did not need to hear at the moment.

Perking at her comment, he repeated it so as to affirm her request: "Fire flakes? Alright." He did not quite hear the second half and waited a moment, patient and quiet. Aang wasn't sure if she would continue, or if she was done for now.

He slowly turned toward the door, making sure to take his time, just in case she had more to say.

She doesn't believe him. He does think she's weak. Even Mai no longer feared her. Nor her mother. Both had made it clear that afternoon. She cannot tell if he is lying and that frustrates her.

His patience and calm despite saying she isn't weak makes her angry. She flexes her hands, wanting to firebend. That would be counter-productive. She wants badly to ask him about her father, to hear he didn't really abandon her...betray her. She keeps her face blank. "Does--and spicey noodles with roasted cow-chicken."

Aang would not push her. She would ask when she wanted to, and that was all there was to it. His smile remained gloomy as he added that to his mental list (Fire flakes; Roasted cow-chicken).

"I'll be back soon, I promise," he told her. Exciting, he was surprised at how cold it was outside of her cell.

Her eyes are on the door once he leaves, waiting for her mother to come in after him but she doesn’t come. Azula’s somewhat disappointed that she doesn’t show.

She begins to pace back and forth in her room until Aang returns. The promise of food is almost enough to make her trust he’ll actually return.
