If my computer freezes when I try to do a system restore (I can click the program to start it, but then nothing else is accessible and I have to shut it off) and when I try to do a scan with Avira and then nothing else is accessible, is my computer doomed?

Try Malwarebytes, that program has helped me well so far. If you have a virus it might be programmed to counteract Avira since Avira is a popular program many use. Malwarebytes might find a way around it.
There're also other ways like starting windows in safe mode and then deleting files manually, checking the autostart menu, often viruses sneak in there.

Okay, thank you! I don't think that MB will conflict with the antivirus, so I'll have a go at it. :)

What do you mean by checking the autostart menu? And trying to do system restore in safe mode froze it up too, bleh.

That's how it is in Windows XP, I don't know about later versions.

Ah, I actually recently saw an article about how to do so for Vista! Well thank you so much. :)
