I find that a closed door and blasting really loud music cures people of "just checking in."

No door, just a cubicle. And I'm nice enough to put my music on earphones. Otherwise they'd have the clue - if it's pop music, use my body language as an indicator. If it's bizarre rhythmic stuff, back away slowly.

You just need to apply negative reinforcement. Keep a squirt bottle filled with water at hand. When someone "pops in", give them a squirt and, in a firm voice, say "No!".

Or tase them.
