I don't think you're going backwards. I don't think you have mental retardation.
First, no-one can say books are better than fanfiction. For example. Second, life goes on and the media change as well. It's only natural you use internet while 10 years ago you didn't use. In my opinion, if something make you feel good, just continue with it. Enjoy it. If it doesn't do you any harm, that is. I don't believe seeking for virtual pleasure - and finding it in art - is a bad thing. In my opinion, it's one of the best things.
I can share my own experience here, if you don't mind. I am over 30 now. As a child and during high school I loved to read. I read a lot. Horribly lot. The fantasy shelf of library was read through. My own fantasy shelf got wider and wider. There are books I still can read at any occasion. But with time, I fell into m&a, and read more comics and ff. Then I had a wave of Harry Potter and it was a many years long love. Then m&a came again. And so on
( ... )
I guess it does make sense that it fluctuates. I'd never thought of it that way. This was just the first time I suddenly felt I couldn't read my so called favorite book, and it made me quite upset.
