ptero: played with them, don't remember.
yacht: pretty good.
mothfight: haven't heard but my pal brandi is maybe in that band now? toured with them in any case.

dan deacon is way better than and (I believe) has been at it way longer than battles. played with him once, seen him twice, IS WONDERFUL. do not miss live show if opportunity is presented. hilarious.

yacht is the shit. BUT it's way better to see him live than recorded. my recommendation is to go see a yacht show, then buy one of his cds (either one is awesome) and imagine him dancing whenever you listen to it.

I don't know if the aesthetic in question is easily definable. All the constituent elements of what make up a band like Battles have been around for so long.
Add N to (x) sounded pretty similar more than ten years ago. I can see contiguity between that and a lot of electronic music, particularly in the hardcore and IDM genres. The weird thing about battles is, in the tracks I've heard they make the most use out of processed analog instruments instead of a straight synthesizer. But there have been bands doing that too (Holy Fuck comes to mind.) It's catchy, it's technically interesting, it's not what I want to listen to.
But yes, mainstream music is way, way, way overprocessed. It's nearly impossible to even count the number of ridiculous electronic sounds like the average pop track these days.

i think the new thing that defines the aesthetic is the high pitched obnoxious voice.
