I used to travel to far corners of the world and make sure I got plenty of time to explore exotic new places, meet new people, take photos, eat strange food, get sick and sweat a lot

I wish it were possible to change your ticket; it seems frustrating to travel so far for such a brief, and circumscribed, visit. Sometimes I pine for really strange far-away places, and there's something a little unfair about getting to go to one but not getting to really see it.
Then again, at least one friend has told you that this is his least favorite place on earth, so perhaps if someplace you visit this year is going to get short shrift, it's okay that it's this one...
It does seem disgruntling to drag yourself all the way over there without enough time to explore. I guess at this point your travels are focused on breadth rather than depth -- which might be good for your goals now, but doesn't suit your desire to put down a few roots wherever you go.

Thinking of you with love. Do try to sample the kimchee, at any rate. :)
Could you make a request of an extra day or two in the country as soon as someone tries to book you to speak? It seems to me it would be a lot easier for all involved to build in the time from the get go rather than trying to change things in an already made itinerary.
Taking control of travel, phase 2? :-j In all seriousness, if the way you travel is changing in general, can you change your approach in general? Maybe you can't go back, but there should be some way to go forward and keep what you love about it. Or find less efficient travel agents. Good luck playing hookey!
