Thief
Backstage was in chaos. People running about, things being moved, arguments done with gestures and faces about everything and anything, all of it as quiet as could be, with the soft whisper of shoes on the floor and the occasional gentled thud of a piece of scenery set down too hard. Typical of any stage show, with silent beaten into the crew by the people in charge.
After a bit, though, it was clear that even those faint and soft sounds were dying, and the reason wouldn’t have been clear to the audience. They were seeing the play for the first time. Not so for the people who had been working it for weeks now. They knew the rhythm and flow of it, and how it should have gone.
Of course, it didn’t help that the two leads had been to maybe a third of the rehearsals. So it shouldn’t have been too unexpected to find out that Daisuke and Satoshi were making it up as they went along. Really not surprising at all.
Right now, they were glaring at each other onstage, Daisuke all righteous anger, and Satoshi with a cool look.
“You come here and tell me that you love me! Liar! You focus on me only because I belonged to another, and that was whose eye you wanted to draw. And now that my love lays dead on the battle field, you come creeping my way, after the closest thing you can have to him!”
Daisuke, playing Freedert, was fiery and full of anger and spirt. Dressed the part, he was bright eyed and flushed as he glared across the stage. Playing the part of Dark, Satoshi looked back at him a cool, calm expression, almost icy eyes that were locked with Daisuke’s fire filled ones.
“And you are wrong. I did not focus on the one you lost for pleasure, only because it was what I was forced to do. My eye caught you first, and I have wanted to draw closer ever since. But I am not allowed, not while the other exists. Our fates would not let us do so. But with him gone, I am free to approach and let you know how I feel.”
“You are a liar and a thief. You would trick me, steal what you could, then leave me alone and missing what it was that I had one had. Tell me, why should I trust you?”
The pair had missed so many practices that they were winging it wildly, and now Daisuke found himself mixing the real Freedert’s story and his own, more personal feelings. He liked Riku, which was true. But there was something about Satoshi that felt really cliche and stupid and he…really didn’t want to get rid of it. But he knew that Satoshi only had his attention directed his way because Daisuke carried Dark within him. If Dark hadn’t been there, Satoshi would never even know that he existed.
A few moments of silence onstage as Dark glided towards Freedert. He took her hand and used it to pull her close. “I do not ask for your trust, lady. I ask for your love. I am here to steal nothing but your heart.”
His arm was warm around Daisuke, holding him tight against him, and the smaller boy couldn’t help but swallow hard at the serious, earnest look in Satoshi’s eyes. He froze when the other boy leaned close, words whispered into his ear.
”That is for no audience, Daisuke. They are for you, the true meaning behind the words.”
Then he pulled back. “I love you.” He said again, then his hand came up and curled around Daisuke’s cheek, and, distantly, Daisuke could hear the girls in the audience squeal as Satoshi brushed their lips together. But it was easy to ignore them as Satoshi murmured again, into the kiss and too quiet for any to hear, “I love you, Daisuke.”
With a soft sigh, Daisuke leaned into Satoshi, and kissed back.
The girls, of course, went wild.
Backstage, as he heard the audience’s reaction, Saga grinned wildly. “Do I know how to pick them or what,” he gloated at his crew people. “I just knew those two would be great together.”
