Battered people.

Gaara, Kenshin, the Elrics, Touya, and Hikaru all have "I am not worthy!" complexes. For each of them that was pretty defining: Gaara trying to find a reason to exist, period, and becoming basically a glorified servant to Suna as the kazekage... Kenshin with the whole 'sessha' business, the Elrics looking to correct their mistake... Touya thinks he's unworthy of his light, and Hikaru (manga version) thinks he's unworthy of Haruhi. You could even throw Near in as a parallel to Gaara.

And also, they're just funny. Italy, Kenshin, Hikaru...
