I'm pretty sure they did notice; my guess is that it's a dying newspaper's attempt to stay relevant. Drudge and Politico have been pushing that Chicago gang story side by side with Obama's pitch for Chicago Olympics for a couple of days now. Gang violence in general is on the rise, which is expected, since entry level organized crime tends to expand during recessions. But one particular incident in Chicago is extra and special news because it might somehow reflect badly on the president.

As far as I know, Associated Press hasn't conflated the two stories, but they are giving free publicity to a handful of protestors who think the Games will be ruinous for the city.

That's the national press corps for you. It's bad journalism to report that the sky is blue unless you can quote somebody who will tell you it's green.
