He was going to pass out soon. Ryo could see it. All the signs were there. The uncontrollable laughter, the trailing off in the middle of a sentence, and just the plain LOOK in his eyes were huge hints. He needed to get Yamapi home. NOW.
“Oi, Pi! I’m tired; let’s go.”
“EH?!?! Already?! But, Ryooooo,” He whined.
“No buts! I’m tired, and unless you want to get home on your own, we are leaving right now.”
“Can’t we stay just five more minutes?”
“Come on, Ryo, stay here a bit longer. Don’t be such a party pooper! Hahaha I said ‘pooper’!” A drunken Jin said; to the amusement of his drinking buddy who laughed hysterically.
Ryo growled at Jin while sending him a menacing glare.
“It’s my turn to stay sober, so it’s my turn to decide when we go home, and I say we are going home NOW!”
Jin rolled his eyes then looked apologetically to Yamapi.
“Well, I’m glad I don’t have to go home with Mr. Grumpy-pants. Too bad for you.”
“Ah, well, he’ll cheer up soon, ne, Ryo?” Yamapi giggled as he leaned dangerously forward toward his best friend.
“Ugh, your breath reeks!”
“Don’t be jealous just because you couldn’t drink today. That’s the smell of a MAN,” Yamapi stated before bursting into uncontrollable laughter once again. He laughed so hard he fell to the floor and just laid there for a moment. Ryo was worried that he had waited too long, but then Yamapi moaned and tried to push himself up.
Kame then walked in from another room. He took in the scene with one look: Jin clinging to the table in front of him with one hand and trying to stifle his laughter to drink the beverage in his other hand, Yamapi attempting to push himself up off the ground and eventually giving up, and Ryo looking at them both in disgust.
“Wow, Pi, you’re really wasted. I’m glad I don’t have to take YOU home!”
“Kame! Where were you? Why did you take so long?” Jin whined and pushed his bottom lip out into a pout.
Kame smiled.
“I was only gone for, like, five minutes.”
“But I miiiiissed you…”
“Well, if you were gonna miss me so much, you should have gone with me in the bathroom.”
“But you didn’t invite me…”
“You should know by now that you don’t need an invitation. I don’t mind taking longer than five minutes in the restroom if I have a good reason,” he winked at Jin with this statement.
Even in his drunk state, he got the message.
“Ryo, I thought you were leaving!” Jin exclaimed with a gleam in his eye.
“Oh you guys make me sick! Come on, Pi,” he quickly yanked Yamapi off the floor, and dragged him out the door.
In the car, Ryo had to wrestle Yamapi to get his seatbelt on.
“Gosh you’re annoying when you’re drunk!”
Yamapi pouted.
After a few minutes of silence on the way home, Ryo thought that Yamapi had finally passed out. Great. He hated having to drag him into his house and such. It was such a hassle. Ryo made a mental note to be sure to get good and drunk next time it was Yamapi’s turn to drive him home.
“You don’t really think I’m annoying, do you?” Yamapi asked Ryo, surprising him.
“I thought you had passed out.”
“No… so do you?”
“Do I what?”
Yamapi decided then that he didn’t really want to know the answer to his question.
“What?”
“You asked me if I do! Do I what?”
“I did?”
Ryo sighed. “Never mind…” He eyed him suspiciously.
“Are you really that drunk?”
“Huh?”
“I don’t know… you don’t seem as drunk as you did back there…”
When Ryo had called him annoying, it had caused him to feel a little more serious. He was worried. He didn’t want Ryo to go away from him. Ever. He knew he didn’t have a chance about Ryo seeing him the same way he saw him. But he was content with being best friends. It was the closest he could get to the straight Ryo.
“Of course I’m drunk!” Yamapi said, slapping on his silliest grin.
“Whatever…”
They fell into silence again.
This time, Yamapi pretended to pass out. He heard Ryo sigh, and he felt it when they pulled up to his home. He felt the car turn off and heard the click of Ryo’s seatbelt. Suddenly, it got really warm. Ryo had leaned over very close to Yamapi.
“Pi…” Ryo tried poking his friend to wake him up. Yamapi moaned, but didn’t even stir.
“Yamaaaapiii…” He began to shake him. “Please wake up! I don’t want to carry you!” he cried exasperated.
“Why not?” Yamapi asked groggily.
“Oh good. You’re awake,” Ryo sounded relieved.
“But I still want you to carry me,” Yamapi mumbled.
“Ha! In your dreams!”
Ryo had no idea how true this statement was.
He helped Yamapi get out of the car and walk, or more like stumble, up to his front door.
“Give me your keys,” He instructed.
“Mmm… in my pocket.” He wanted to feel Ryo’s hand in his pocket. It was the closest he could get to initiating touch without creeping Ryo out. Not to mention he was just plain feeling lazy.
“Well, get them out! You aren’t dead!”
“So meeaan…” He whined.
“Why are you and Jin always so whiny when you are drunk?!”
“Here,” He said as he held out his keys.
“Good job,” Ryo mocked with a smirk.
After helping Yamapi get in the door, Ryo asked if he could leave.
“No!” Yamapi exclaimed desperately.
Ryo’s eyebrows shot up.
Pi stammered out, “I- I- heard there’s a burglar. Yeah, the neighbour across the street got robbed last night, and I’m worried they will come here next. Please stay with me tonight?”
“Really? You are afraid? Did all of that training as a boxer do nothing for you?”
“I’ll just feel safer… pleeeeease?” He begged as he tugged on Ryo’s arm.
“Fine! Just… just don’t do that,” He said, pushing Yamapi’s hand off of him.
“Yaaay!”
Both men changed, Ryo into some of Yamapi’s clothes, and lay on the bed.
“Ryo?” Yamapi called to his back.
“Mm?” Ryo responded half asleep.
“Can I ask you a question?”
“Mm.”
“Earlier… you said I was annoying… is that true? Do you really think I’m annoying?”
Ryo was surprised at the amount of emotion he heard in Yamapi’s voice. He turned over and looked at his friend.
“What? I just said you are annoying when you are drunk.”
“And you don’t like it…” Yamapi looked away.
“Pi, everyone is annoying when they are drunk. It’s like, a law.”
Yamapi giggled a bit, but became serious again.
“I don’t want to annoy you any more. I won’t drink when I’m with you.”
“Eh?! What has gotten into you? You are just drunk now and not thinking straight. It’s fine, really.”
“No, I am not that drunk anymore,” Yamapi exclaimed, exasperated. “Ryo, I’m serious.”
“What is wrong with you? Why did this come up all of a sudden?”
“I just… don’t want you to get tired of me. You are my best friend, and I don’t want to lose you.”
“Pi, who said I was going anywhere?”
“No one and I don’t want anyone to.”
Ryo smirked.
“Sorry to tell you this, but you are stuck with me.”
“Ryo, don’t play right now; I’m serious.”
“And so am I.”
Yamapi pondered that for a moment, and then nodded his head.
“Ok, I trust you.”
“Good.”
“Thank you. I love you.”
The words just flowed out of Yamapi’s mouth. He hadn’t even realized what he said until he saw the look on Ryo’s face. “I mean as a friend! Not, not like that. Because, I’m a guy and… and you’re a guy. That’s just… just… gross.”
“Yeah… it is…” Ryo blushed.
“I mean… we… even if I did like you like that… it couldn’t work… right?”
“Well, yeah, because…” Ryo looked Yamapi in the eye. “Why not?”
“Because… what would everyone think?”
“Does it matter? Since when do we care what others think?”
Yamapi shrugged.
He almost fell out of the bed from shock when the love of his life leaned forward, just inches from his face.
“I love you too,” he whispered.
Yamapi’s heart leapt in his chest. Calm down! He means as a friend. You just said the same thing to him.
Ryo continued, “And I DON’T mean as a friend.”
Yamapi’s eyes widened.
Ryo continued to move forward until their lips met.
This had to be a dream. Yamapi couldn’t believe this was really happening! Maybe he was more drunk than he realized…
If this WAS a dream, he didn’t ever want to wake up; if this WASN’T a dream, he didn’t ever want to fall asleep.
It was just way too good to be true!
Ryo’s words shook him out of the fog. “Pi, are you alright? Do you want me to stop? Or leave? I understand…”
“Don’t go; don’t stop,” he breathed.
Ryo grinned. “I thought I read the signs correctly.”
Yamapi kissed Ryo back. “Yes…. Yes you did.”
He captured his lips once more.
Light kisses turned passionate in a matter of seconds. It became just a clash of lips, tongues, and teeth and a tangle of limbs and sheets. Yamapi felt as if he was free-falling, with only Ryo to hang on to.
The night was better than he could have ever dreamt up.
The next morning, Yamapi woke up with his head lying on Ryo’s bare chest.
He smiled, glad it was real. He lightly pressed his lips to his lover’s chest. Suddenly, a pair of short bare legs entwined with his.
“Good morning,” Yamapi whispered.
“You’ve been sleeping longer than you think. It’s afternoon.”
“Eh? Really?”
Ryo laughed and playfully poked Yamapi’s nose.
“You really did drink a lot last night. How do you feel?”
“Fine, since I have a new drug that helps with hangovers.”
“Really? Remind me to try it next time I am drunk.”
Yamapi kissed his way up Ryo’s chest, neck, and chin until he finally reached the other’s mouth.
“I will… I will.”
