Chapter 7
~knock knock knock~
“I’ll get it!” Raina ran to open the door. She became a little shy when she saw not just Yamapi, but Jin as well come to the door. “Oh, hello. What a pleasant surprise.”
“You weren’t expecting us?”
“No, I was expecting just Yamapi and I thought Myrah would just go. I- where are my manners? Come in, please!”
The men silently stepped inside. “Jin, this is Myrah’s friend, uh…”
“Raina,” she supplied. “It’s so nice to meet you.”
“Oh, the pleasure is all mine.” He grabbed her hand and planted a light kiss on the back of it. “You have a beautiful home.”
“Oh, I- uh… thank you.”
“So,” Yamapi grinned mischievously, “is somebody not ready yet?”
“Ha ha, she is ready, and not a moment too soon. She is just-“
“I’m right here.”
Raina, Jin, and Yamapi all turned toward the direction Myrah’s voice came from.
“Hello, Jin. Tomo.” They nodded back in greeting. Suddenly, there was an awkward silence.
Myrah felt overdressed. Both men had on slacks, but with colored v-neck t-shirts.
Jin was appraising Myrah’s outfit, but was most definitely pleased.
Yamapi was rendered speechless. He could not believe how beautiful she looked. He suddenly felt the urge to embrace her. It took all of his energy to resist it.
Myrah couldn’t stand the men staring at her any longer. “What? Am I overdressed?”
“NO!” Both cried out in unison, causing both girls to laugh.
“We were just amazed with your beauty.” Jin said easily.
“Are you sure? I can go chan-“
“Oh no you don’t! You are going out with both of these gentlemen exactly the way you are now. You look fine, I swear. Both of them already made it pretty clear you are not overdressed, so you have nothing to worry about.” She began to push Myrah toward the men and in turn led them all out the door. “Now, you all better get going. Have a good time. I might not be here when you get back though, Myrah. Edwin and I were planning on going out tonight. You have the key, right?” Myrah nodded as Yamapi opened the car door for her. “Good. I’ll see you later! Bye! Have fun and be safe!” She all but shoved Myrah down into the seat where two sports jackets lay to Myrah’s relief (she wasn’t as overdressed as she had feared), but allowed Yamapi to close the door.
Raina stood on the sidewalk waving as they drove away.
“That girl is quite a talker, isn’t she?” Jin remarked.
“Actually, believe it or not, she isn’t. Only when she needs to be.”
Yamapi was strangely silent still. It was unnerving. Myrah sneaked a look at him and noticed he was staring at her with an intensity in his eyes that she couldn’t understand. Quickly, she looked away.
Her sudden movement attracted Jin’s attention. Why did she look so uncomfortable? And more importantly, why wasn’t Yamapi doing anything about it? Yamapi was always the one who had a knack for smoothing over awkward moments. What could be going on?
“So, Yamapi, you are strangely quiet. Anything on your mind?”
Yamapi shook his head no. Well that did a lot of good. Jin tried to think of something to get someone talking. He wasn’t sure he could take much more of this.
He was surprised to hear Myrah blurt out, “What? Is something wrong? Why are you looking at me like that?!”
Yamapi felt as if someone had dumped a ton of sand into his mouth. He licked his lips before he tried answering. He was barely able to croak out, “It’s nothing.”
This was not good. Since when did he feel nervous? That was her job! She was the one constantly freaking out over nothing, and he was the level-headed one. So why was he feeling so funny right now…
“I really don’t like the way you have been staring at me. It makes me feel very uncomfortable. Why don’t you just take a freakin picture?! That will last a whole lot longer.”
To her dismay, Yamapi pulled out his phone and did exactly what she said.
“It was a joke,” Myrah grumbled.
He seriously needed to get over… whatever this was that he was going through. He couldn’t stay silent the whole night. Myrah would have a fit, and maybe even demand to leave early. NO! He had to snap out of it right now. His heart ached at just the thought of the night being cut short.
“I-“ His voice cracked. How embarrassing. He cleared his throat and tried again. “I’m sorry. You are right. I am being extremely rude. Did I tell you how beautiful you look? I don’t think you are being very fair to all the other girls who will be at the club tonight.”
She blushed, to Yamapi’s delight. “There’s my girl. Red as a tomato.”
“I am not! Am I?”
Yamapi laughed. “Not yet you’re not. Just pink as a- uh… what’s pink?”
“Bubblegum?” Jin tried from the front seat.
“Uh, ok. Pink as bubblegum. But I know how to make you turn red as a tomato.”
“Please don…” She lost her train of thought as Yamapi leaned closer to her and his scent enveloped her completely. She closed her eyes and inhaled.
“I wish you really were bubblegum.” She could feel his breath in her face. “You know why?” She shook her head. “It’s because then I could eat you. You are the sweetest thing I have ever tasted.” Oh, he was good alright. She could feel heat rising to her face. “Can I have a taste right now?”
She wanted to. Oh, she wanted to so badly. Instead, her eyes flew open and she said “B-but… what about Jin?”
“Jin? Jin who? I don’t know a Jin.”
“But he’s right up there driving the car.”
“You didn’t mind the other taxi driver.”
She was dumbfounded. It had never occurred to her that there was another man in the car the last time.
“Hold still.” He told her. He then proceeded to cup her face with one hand and caress her cheek while his other hand rested on her shoulder and he gently pulled her forward into his-
“Sorry to kill the moment, but I gotta go get Amber.” Jin announced as he got out of the car.
Myrah stiffened and sat straight up like a board at the mention of Amber’s name. She was coming?! The beauty who was meant for Yamapi the previous night? This could not be happening.
Yamapi was confused at Myrah’s sudden change in behavior. He was already nervous enough, but now she was acting strange. What could be wrong?
“Myrah? Is everything alright?”
Silently, she nodded. But he could see in her eyes that something was not right.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.”
“Don’t lie to me.”
“I’m no-“ She could tell he wasn’t buying it. She wished she was a better liar. “It’s… nothing important…”
“It must be if it’s bothering you. Just tell me. Please?”
Myrah sighed before answering. “It’s just that I’m… I guess I’m a little worried is all.”
“About?”
“Amber,” she whispered as she dropped her head.
“Why would-“
“Because that-that… GODDESS was supposed to be YOUR date! I can’t even compare to her! I mean, look at me!”
“I am.”
Her head shot up when he said that. There was that look again. What was it?
“The only goddess I see is sitting right next to me. You’re right, though. You can’t compare to her. It wouldn’t be fair. You are way prettier.”
“And YOU are only trying to make me feel better.” She smiled shyly. “But I appreciate it.”
Yamapi shook his head. How can she not see it? She is so incredibly gorgeous, and she doesn’t even realize it! “You don’t even know… never mind.” She probably wouldn’t listen anyway. But one day she will… Wait, ONE DAY?! What was he thinking? As if he was going to have anytime to convince her. Once he left for Japan he would never see her again, just as planned.
The car door opened then and Amber stepped inside. She looked just as amazing as the night before with a skin tight black halter dress on and her fiery red hair swept up haphazardly.
The three passengers greeted each other and then fell into silence. Jin tried in vain to get someone talking. He was overjoyed after they finally found a parking spot and made their way into the club.
