Chapter 5

The waiter did bring an extra chair, and not a minute too soon. The other two girls arrived looking a little too excited, until they caught sight of her. Then, all they looked was confused. Jin and Yamapi stood to greet the newcomers. Jin walked to the one who must’ve been his date and planted a kiss on her forehead. Then, the introductions began. Myrah could see the disappointment cross the girl’s, Amber, face. Apparently, she was supposed to be on this date with Yamapi.

Next to her, Myrah felt very drab. Amber’s loose red hair fell to her bare, creamy colored shoulders in soft curls. She looked stunning in a strapless, mid-thigh gold dress that showed off her hour-glass figure. She had on matching gold pumps studded with emeralds that matched her gold and emerald dangly earrings and bracelet.

Laura was another model-like girl. Her silky, blonde hair fell down around her shoulders like a waterfall. It was set off nicely by her tanned skin. She was wearing a spaghetti strap pale pink dress that went to just above her knees. It fell into slight pleats around her legs and was studded all around with diamonds. She complimented her dress with simple white stilettos and had no jewelry on whatsoever.

Myrah wondered what she had gotten herself into. She was sure that she wouldn’t last long as Yamapi’s “girlfriend” if THIS is what she had to compete with. She was sure that she would be forgotten. Oh well, she sighed, at least she had gotten one night with him.

Laura asked Jin if they could speak to him and he walked a little ways away with the other two girls. She could tell that neither of them was too happy, and she knew it was because of her. “Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea,” she whispered to Yamapi. He raised his eyebrows in surprise.

“Why not?”

“Look at her! She’s gorgeous! And she was meant for YOU. Really, I feel as though you are being cheated sitting next to me. And look how unhappy they look. I just think-“

“Stop. You are every bit as beautiful as either one of those girls. If anything, Amber is probably jealous that she doesn’t stand a chance next to the beauty that snagged me first.” He gave her a peck on the cheek. “Didn’t I tell you to stop worrying?”

She knew he was lying, but it made her feel good anyway. “Ok, no more worrying. I promise.”

“Good. Now just enjoy yourself.”

The other three returned then, and, to Myrah’s dismay, the lovely Amber sat next to her at their round table. She felt very uncomfortable under Amber’s scrutinizing stare. Yamapi settled his hand reassuringly over Myrah’s and gave her an encouraging smile.

“So, Myrah, you live in Japan? But you obviously aren’t Japanese.”

“I, uh, had to go there for school, and I loved it so much that I decided to just move there.” She hadn’t planned on making up stories like this! She hoped she could keep them coming fast enough, and that she wouldn’t end up contradicting her story.

“Have you two been together long?” She froze and looked at Yamapi helplessly.

“No,” Yamapi jumped in, “just a few months, really.”

“Then how did he get you to come down here with him? You don’t look like the type to just up and leave everything to go on vacation with some guy you barely started dating.”

“I had been meaning to come back to the states for a while now for a visit. My mom and friends had been bugging me, but I just got too busy.”

“Oh, what do you do?” Crap. She couldn’t think of anything fast enough. “I- uh… nothing special really…”

“Nothing special? Oh, honey, you are much too modest! She’s interning at a children’s hospital.”

Jin looked impressed. Good. He bought it.

“So, why aren’t you staying at my place with Pi? There’s plenty of room, and any girlfriend of his is more than welcome.”

“I’m staying at a friend’s place, actually. She would be none too happy with me if I didn’t, to be honest.”

“That’s too bad. But then, why didn’t he stay with you? I wouldn’t mind. I would understand if you would rather do that.”

“Oh, there simply isn’t enough room! Not to mention, I think my friend kinda wanted to make this vacation full of girl time.”

“Oh I see.” He seemed to accept her answers, thankfully. She really hadn’t expected this to be twenty questions and was relieved when the waiter finally came to take their orders. Yamapi assured her she didn’t have to worry about prices, which really didn’t matter since the menu didn’t show any. Still, she only ordered a salad. She wasn’t very hungry, thanks to her nerves.

The rest of the dinner went basically the same way. Most of the talk revolving around her and Yamapi’s new relationship. After what seemed like a lifetime, the dinner ended. “Alright,” Jin announced, “time for clubbing!”

Oh no, she wasn’t ready for that. “Um, Jin?”

“Yes?”

“I was wondering if we could maybe take a rain check on that?”

“A rain check?! Why?”

“Well, the thing is, that was a long flight, and I’m afraid I may have a bit of jetlag. Do you think we could postpone that until tomorrow night? Yamapi, is that alright with you?”

Yamapi nodded, looking relieved. “I didn’t want to say anything, but I definitely have jetlag as well.”

Jin looked disappointed. “Oh, well, I suppose it could wait until tomorrow.”

“Why don’t you go out still with these girls?” Myrah suggested, feeling bad.

“Yes, Jin! Let’s!” exclaimed Laura.

“Sure. I don’t mind.”

“Well, then, let’s go. Waiter!” Yamapi called.

As soon as the bill was paid, they all went outside. “So, I’ll talk to you in a little bit?” Yamapi asked Myrah as she began to walk toward her car. Her heart skipped a beat. Was he serious? She figured she better play along, but not to get her hopes up. This could just be all part of the act.

She turned to him to answer and noticed his arms were open. She stepped into them and couldn’t repress her smile as he hugged her. “Yes,” she finally answered him.

“Good,” he said as he leaned down to brush her lips with his. “Good bye then.” And he released her.

She practically skipped back to her car. Who cares if it was all just pretend, she could still have fun with it, couldn’t she? She couldn’t stop grinning the whole way home.

-----

After he finally shooed Jin out of the house, reassuring him the whole way that he would be fine alone, he picked up his phone to call Myrah. He didn’t know why he felt compelled to call her, he really didn’t have any need to. He just wanted to talk to her again. He couldn’t get the picture of her at dinner out of his head. She looked so incredibly beautiful, he almost forgot about the other girls at the table!

He couldn’t think like that! This was only an act, he had to remind himself. But he could already feel… something. He finally brushed it off telling himself he was just tired. He would feel better after a good night’s sleep.

But… he should still call her to let her know what a great job she did. She was the type that was extremely unsure of herself and was in need of much reassuring.

After finally coming to this conclusion, he made the call.

~ring ring~

“Hello?” She sounded a little groggy.

“Did I wake you up?”

“Not exactly. I was just about to fall asleep when you called.”

“I’m sorry. I should have called sooner.”

“No no, it’s fine. Did you need something?”

To talk to you. Where had that thought come from? “Nothing in particular. I was just thinking, I don’t think I ever said ‘thank you’.”

“Oh, that isn’t necessary. I’m enjoying it. I should be thanking you for making my dreams come true.”

He laughed. She was just too cute. “Oh, then let me start over. I was just thinking, I never said ‘your welcome’.” He grinned as he heard her laughter tinkle through the phone. “It really is my pleasure. But seriously, thank you so much. You did an excellent job tonight. If I didn’t know any better, I would have believed you.”

“Oh, well, you know, it’s all in a day’s work. Interning at a children’s hospital.”

“It was the first thing that came to my mind! At least something came to my mind.”

“Yes, what would I do without you?”

“Not be in this situation at all.”

“True, but I also would not be having as much fun tonight as I did. How long are you in America, anyway?”

“I don’t know for sure yet. At least a week. It depends on Johhny to be honest.”

“Oh, ok.” They fell into an awkward silence. “So, uh… was that all you wanted to call for?”

He searched his mind for something else to say just to keep her on the phone, but drew a blank. “Yeah, I guess it was.”

“Ok then, I’m sure you’re very tired, so I’ll let you go. See you tomorrow?”

“Yes. Definitely.”

“Ok, good night, Yamapi.”

“Oh, you can’t call me Yamapi. If you’re going to be my girlfriend, you’ll have to call me Tomo.” He suddenly really wanted to hear her say his name.

“Tomo?” It sounded like music to his ears.

“Yeah.”

“Ok then, good night, Tomo.”

“Good night, Myrah.” And they hung up.

He didn’t understand himself. He really needed to get to sleep. There was no way they could work out together, even if he wanted to. He didn’t want a girlfriend. He was happy being single. The whole point of her pretending to be his girlfriend was so that he wouldn’t have to get one!

Angry at his own confusion, he got in the shower and turned the water heat all the way up and let the scorching water run over his body, turning his skin red. He hoped the burning would get his mind off of her. No such luck. Finally, defeated and exhausted, he turned off the water, and eventually went to bed.

By the time Jin got home, Yamapi was in a deep sleep. Jin was disappointed, though, because he hadn’t gotten a chance to talk to Yamapi about his new girlfriend and what he thought of her, but he supposed that could wait until tomorrow.
