82 days until the vernal equinox
Usually, I like to delve into the history of the games I play but as far as I can tell, Bandai approached Capcom asking if they could make an exclusive Mega Man game for their new handheld system and Capcom was like “yeah, okay.” and that’s it.
For those of you who don't hanashimasu Nihongo, the name of the game means Megaman & Bass: Challenger From The Future.
The options allow you to change the controls. Woo. It also offers a sound test.
If you wait around, you get an intro. There’s no translated rom or translation patch out there that I know of and it really doesn't help that Google is doing everything it can to stymie even the best Google-Fu, but there is a translated script out there.
"The year is 200X. A group of robots calling themselves the Dimensions attacked Symphony City, a city where people and robots lived in peace. Though without any witnesses, the one leading the Dimensions with overwhelming power was a robot like Rockman. He was said to be a dark and wicked person completely obsessed with destruction. Rockman, who heard this news at Right's laboratory, took off to the scene despite being under maintenance. At the same time, Wily saw the dark Rockman, and to ascertain the mystery he sends Forte to the city. Just who is this dark Rockman really?!"
Rockman Shadow: "My name is Rockman Shadow! I am a robot with great power. I won't forgive those who don't obey me!"
Rockman: "Stop your harming of everyone! Who the heck are you? How can it be you look just like me?"
Forte: "I've come to end the life of Rockman who I hate to this day, but somehow this situation is different than usual."
Rockman: "Forte, I don't have time to be concerned with that now. I must hold back those robots!"
Forte: "Ch! It can't be helped, Wily's laboratory is near this city. I won't carry out our war of attrition here!"
Much like Mega Man and Bass, you can choose Mega Man or Bass. I'll be playing as Mega Man. And I'll be calling him Mega Man too.
Bass’s expression looks really weird here. And I think he has human hands. He must be making deals with the Robot Devil.
The weapons you get from Robot Masters are slightly different if you play as Bass. Like in Megaman and Bass, Bass can fire in all directions except down but they don’t go through walls, he can dash, and he can't double jump. On the other hand, Mega Man can charge his Mega Buster and he can slide.
You start in this cave immediately. No plot or anything beforehand.
Those bells are the basic enemy.
If you kill an enemy, its shot disappears.
Mega Man moves very stiffly.
Sometimes it's hard to tell when there are spikes.
Of course, spikes still kill you in one hit. Sliding is weird too. And you can't touch the sides of the spikes. You know, I don't think that ever came up in the original Mega Man games. Yes, there are pointy spikes and not ball spikes in some of the Mega Man 2 Wily stages but there's no way to approach them from the sides.
He’s called the Gray Devil but everything’s gray. The Wonderswan can display EIGHT entire shades of gray. That's twice as many as the Game Boy (except by then, they figured out ways for a color display to not consume prodigious amounts of battery power and released the Game Boy Color). Less than a year later, Bandai released the Wonderswan Color. It had half the battery life, which was a still-impressive 20 hours, and could display 8 bit color with a palette of 4096 of them. Games developed for the original WonderSwan would still play in grayscale on the Wonderswan Color.
You have to hit this Devil in the eye and it’s very finicky and if you get hit by his globs, you’re slowed down and take damage over time. He’s easy to dodge so it just takes a long time. Fun!
If for whatever reason, you still want to play this after fighting literally the worst boss in Mega Man history, I suggest making a save state so you never have to do this ever again.
30 minutes later.
Rockman Shadow: Beating my Grey Devil, what I would expect from Rockman. But ruining my robot factory I cannot forgive.
Rockman: Who exactly are you? Why do I feel I've met you before? Stop these terrible things you're doing and we'll find a way for you to live and get along with everyone.
Rockman Shadow: Fufufu, unfortunately I cannot do such a thing. If you want to know who I am, defeat my underlings.
The stage select shows a defeated boss portrait. I'm not sure if the Gray Devil's regular portrait is in the game data somewhere.
There's a shop in this game but all the items are very expensive and most of them are single use.
A konro is a type of portable charcoal grill. I’m trying to find the etymology and all I can find is that it’s a Makassarese rib soup with coriander, keluwak, galangal, nutmeg, turmeric, cinnamon, tamarind, lemongrass, clove, and Indonesian bayleaf. Sounds delicious.
Kiln furnace, maybe.
Konro Man’s music is borrowed from Ground Man.
You can’t shoot through Flail Joe’s flail.
The hand boss is like that miniboss in Split Mushroom’s stage. Just shoot at it when it pops up and it doesn’t destroy the ledges on the left and right walls.
The scissors just fly around in a pattern.
Some parts of the floor explode when you step on them.
Fire Joe’s flamethrower oscillates up and down. You can’t shoot through it unless you have the Barrier Wind.
Konro Man makes a bunch of fireballs fall from the sky, then he shoots a wave of flames at you, then he moves over to the other side, shooting a bunch of small fireballs midway through, and repeats.
Ugh, Mega Man looks like a Stonetoss character or something.
The weapon names only vaguely allude to the Robot Master.
Here's Konro Man's defeated pose.
Let's move on.
Not only does he have a fan in his body, he has two hand fans.
Aircon Man rotates the screen. How annoying. Thankfully, his stage is the only stage with this gimmick. If you’re playing on a real life Wonder Swan, you’re not going to have too many problems aside from the fact that the WonderSwan is only about the size of a pocket calculator and was meant for tiny hands and not giant monster hands, but if you’re emulating, you might have issues. My choices were “adjust to the horizontal screen, temporarily remap the controls and rotate the screenshots afterward.” or “stretch the screen in ways that it should not be stretched.” If you have a laptop, you can rotate it.
Aircon Man’s music is borrowed from Cold Man.
Hammerheads are basically Thwomps, except you can hurt them.
The fish shoot eight bullets in all directions.
The flame shower is useful here because otherwise, you’d have to bounce your shots off of the metools and fight a war of attrition that you’re most likely going to use because portrait mode will give you a headache. So much of a headache that I wrote "use" instead of "lose."
It’s not much better on the actual hardware. You can trust me on that even though I don't have a WonderSwan and I've never seen one in real life.
The seals just slide back and forth. Shots you ricochet off of enemies still do damage.
Shoot the squid enemies once to make them puff up.
To move them, face the direction you want to go, which is harder than it sounds.
They’ll explode if you shoot them again so be careful.
The squid also explodes if it touches a spike. My brain hurts. Let's move on.
His pattern is simple. And thankfully, the screen goes back to norma. He’ll jump up and shoot a couple of cubes at you.
The rocks or clouds or whatever those are can crush you between them. He’s super-easy otherwise, mostly because he doesn’t have invincibility frames.
If you let him live for that long, he'll suck in a bunch of Metools with his fan.
The Barrier Wind weapon is every other boss’s weakness. In fact, some guides say that enemies don’t even have weaknesses. They all do the same amount of damage but since invincibility frames aren’t a thing, although they do get periods where they are invincible, and in a few bosses' case, you have to hit a specific part, they just keep hitting the enemy over and over again.
Annoyingly, your weapon energy doesn't recharge after beating a stage.
You can recharge all your weapons but it costs 300 screwillydoos. Yeah, this game takes place in Australia. For what it's worth, I ended the game with about 250 screws.
And the Rush Coil is a one-use item.
You can go back to stages but to exit the stage you already completed, you have to use your single use exit item that you got for 50 screws.
Dangan meas bullet. Ronpa, if you’re wondering, translates to rebuttal.
Dangan Man’s music is originally Dynamo Man’s.
Hey, it’s that bee from Megaman X. Instead of doing anything interesting, this guy shoots destroyable homing missiles at you and then leaps to the other side of the screen again and again and again.
Most of these minibosses are easily defeated with the Mega Buster.
It's a cube that shoots cubes.
Those guys just roll back and forth.
Dangan Man starts by jumping over you, tosses bombs, turns himself into an invincible bullet and dashes at you, and then jumps again. The Barrier Wind can take down half of his health in a single shot.
Rockn' Vulcan homes in on enemies.
It looks like he dropped a contact lens.
A komuso is an order of Zen Buddhist mendicants who wore straw baskets on their heads and played shakuhachis when meditating. They were banned after the Meiji Restoration. Oft, ninjas used komuso disguises.
His stage theme is Tengu Man, which makes sense, as a tengu is a type of Japanese forest spirit.
The scarabs balance balls on their feet and toss them at you. I realized after playing this that you can barely see it.
Frogs encase you in goop, but remember: if an enemy dies, so do its projectiles.
The midboss goes up and down, shooting a laser occasionally and teleporting to the other side for no real reason. Try to not be on the same level.
Komuso Man splits into three copies which shoot three bullets apiece at you, lands in the center, runs to the other side, repeats this a few tiems, and then calls forth flames from the ground, which is a good opportunity to spam Flame Shower and destroy him. He might be the hardest boss in the game, which isn't saying a whole lot.
Doppel Crash can be used to break certain walls. It’s useless otherwise.
I do like the little x's for eyes.
A new stage has opened up.
In the concept art, these guys were called Gemini Men. I guess someone realized that there was already a Gemini Man.
Rockman: Blues, tell me! Who is the black helmeted me?
Blues: That is Rockman Shadow, just like his name, he is your shadow. As you become stronger he(it) will be the true enemy you face.
Rockman: What are you talking about? What should I do, Blues?
His background music is Astro Man’s. It’s almost unrecognizable. And awful.
The rectangles can only be hit when they’re not facing the screen.
The miniboss, which looks a bit like Oscar the Grouch, jumps back and forth and causes debris to fall from the ceiling. But don’t be fooled! On the way back, he makes short hops instead of one giant leap.
The second half of this stage uses Gravity Man's gimmick.
There are pillbugs in this level that drop down on you and then roll around but I didn't screenshot one for whatever reason.
Clock Man clones himself, the clone slides at you. They both jump up, meet in the middle, shoot a bunch of bullets, then get back in position and fire two halves of a stopwatch, which freezes you and makes lightning appear.
Time Switch stops time for four seconds. You can’t shoot but you can walk through enemies and their shots without taking damage. It’s uh, useless. It doesn’t cause damage to anything either.
The Bubble Bats / Battons don’t act like their normal Mega Man counterparts. It's like their only exposure to other Mega Man games was an unofficial guide to Mega Man 2 and didn't know about things like weakness chains.
And now we reveal Compas Man.
Compas Man’s stage music is Pirate Man’s.
Compassman: My name is Compassman; Rockman Shadow's friend. After this stage is Shadow's castle. But, I won't let you get past here. Prepare for me to be your enemy from now. You'd better fight for your life if you expect to live.
You can only hit this guy when he reveals his head. The thing above drops spike balls on you, or reveals a turret that shoots a whole bunch of bullets at you.
Compas Man splits in two parts and you have to hit that dongly bit on the bottom half while they’re split to damage him.
The top half shoots you and occasionally spins down to hit you, while the bottom half walks back and forth.
He doesn't give you anything when you defeat him.
So let's move on to the final stage.
Rockman: Rockman Shadow! This is the end of your factory. I don't want to fight with you. Let's just stop this meaningless battle.
Rockman Shadow: You finally came. Just like I told you, I will reveal my identity. In the past you fought with a robot named Quint. He was a modified version of you from the future, and so am I. In the future Wily has still not given up his world conquest ambition. To stop that I came back from the future. For the sake of the future, I must erase the existence of the robots of this time. I have no choice but to take the problem at its roots: the past robots.
Rockman: And that's why you attacked everyone!? I can't allow such a method like that. Using power to solve things isn't right, is what professor Right always told me. I believe so too! I don't want to see the tears of Roll and everyone! There has to be a better way, and I will stop you!
The plot makes no sense.
That's right! Despite the title, this is not a sequel to Mega Man and Bass in the main series, it's part of the Game Boy continuity.
In these rooms, the floors collapse and you’ll have to use the clouds that these enemies blow at you to get across.
The skull will jump down and shoot homing bones at you. There's no boss rush or anything.
Lancer Joe runs at you. His shield can block your shots. Maybe it can't block the Barrier Wind but I don't want to waste that. The final boss awaits us.
Peter Quint, you devil!
In his first phase, he’ll jump, he’ll slide. In his second phase, he’ll bring out his pogo stick and teleport around and debris will fall from the ceiling. In his third and final phase, he’ll shoot sparks and dash at you with his energy sword. He’s actually very easy. I was worried because I didn’t have that much Barrier Wind energy.
Rockman: What a tough fight... It was like I was fighting with myself. When I took you down, I felt as if something in my heart went missing.
Rockman Shadow: Well done, Rockman... Just as I thought. I couldn't win... but this is okay. The truth is, it would be a lie to say that Wily continues his evil ways in the future. I was a robot left behind as a failed version of Quint. But I rebuilt myself to my current level of power. And then I did everything I could to destroy the world. In the future no one could stop me. But I traveled back in time, so that I could find someone that could defeat me.
Rockman: Then... that means you wanted to die all along?! Then please go quickly, I don't know if there is any other way!
Rockman Shadow: No, it's alright. I don't expect another robot like me to be created. Didn't you realize it? As you fought with my subordinates... Every time you defeat an enemy, it becomes more dangerous for you. I was literally your shadow. Don't drown yourself in power like I did, Rockman. Keep on protecting everyone... Farewell...
Rockman: I understand, Shadow... I'll continue my fight from here. I promise I won't misuse my power. Goodbye...
Rockman: Forte, I'm going to leave the rest to you. I want to go back to everyone. But if you get violent again, I'll stop you with all my power! From now on my goal is to create a world without war!
I do not believe that this game was meant to be the missing link between Mega Man Classic and Mega Man X.
burning question: Someone said this was the worst Mega Man game of all time. Did they forget that the two DOS games exist? Did they choose to forget?
