I'm frankly sick of seeing Toyota (and now Honda) crucified for what I consider to be a relatively fast response recalling broken vehicles. This would've taken recall-adverse automakers many years in the past. (I won't name names because they probably ALL did this.) The press coverage demonstrates why automakers tend to not recall vehicles as ( Read more... )

I also am happy with my Toyota (a Yaris, which I believe is not affected by the recall)!

I think your car was made in Japan just like mine was (mine was built with all Japanese parts as well), and only cars with a certain US-sourced part were affected.

I guess 7 years is a bit too long to find a cause for the gas pedal issue. They had the resources to get to the bottom of it sooner than this. I'd be generous and say that 2 years is enough time.

The fact that Toyota resisted a recall underscores the misinformation that can happen. They knew there would be lots of people saying, "Toyota recalled a BUNCH of cars so now they SUCK forever!" It's the same reason Ford waited forever before recalling vehicles that caught on fire in the meantime, and GM for the Dex-Cool issue which affected lots of their cars and required litigation to fix (and that one is STILL not subject to recalls yet).

The way other manufacturers (through their dealers) are acting now pretty much proves that a recall can wreck business, even if it's a "hey, we made a mistake on a bunch of our cars; let us fix it for free" thing.

OMG, Toyota is getting a bad rep! This must mean my 1992 Corolla isn't safe anymore to drive even though nothing about it has changed!

I'd like to note that my Corolla's owners manual explains what to do in case of an emergency like the gas pedal sticking and this was 18 years ago...

Yes, the "do this if the throttle is stuck" part of the owner's manual has been around for awhile. It's been in every manual I've read.

It's really boggling to hear "we got up to 120MPH and could do NOTHING" when in fact the driver was in panic mode. And cars without rev limiters are not common these days, so "shift to neutral and get off the road" works without damaging anything.
