I'm frankly sick of seeing Toyota (and now Honda) crucified for what I consider to be a relatively fast response recalling broken vehicles. The fact that Toyota resisted a recall underscores the misinformation that can happen. They knew there would be lots of people saying, "Toyota recalled a BUNCH of cars so now they SUCK forever!" It's the same reason Ford waited forever before recalling vehicles that caught on fire in the meantime, and GM for the Dex-Cool issue which affected lots of their cars and required litigation to fix (and that one is STILL not subject to recalls yet).
The way other manufacturers (through their dealers) are acting now pretty much proves that a recall can wreck business, even if it's a "hey, we made a mistake on a bunch of our cars; let us fix it for free" thing.

I'd like to note that my Corolla's owners manual explains what to do in case of an emergency like the gas pedal sticking and this was 18 years ago...

It's really boggling to hear "we got up to 120MPH and could do NOTHING" when in fact the driver was in panic mode. And cars without rev limiters are not common these days, so "shift to neutral and get off the road" works without damaging anything.
