The worst metaphor EVAH

Nov 30, 2004 17:35

The mass email and fax mailing I just had to send out contained the following sentence:

"Wie ein Schiff ohne Ruder im offenen Meer treibt ein Unternehmen in den Gezeiten der Wirtschaft führungslos umher, wenn es nicht auf der Grundlage zeitnah ermittelter Daten gesteuert wird."

That means:

"Like a ship without a rudder on the open sea, an ( Read more... )

Oh, that is so bad it's downright great. I bet it's on a motivational poster somewhere right now. Waiting.

Also, the first thing I thought when I read the bold parts was "Oh! Master and Commander!" For some reason. Does one really need a reason to think about MC? Your entries seem to have that effect on me or something. :)

It follows me, huh? Ever since I adopted "Bethings" for my icons, it follows me. Now even to work.

Ship metaphors. Gotta hate them. :-D

But, you know, when there are half-naked rhythmic men at the oars, or swach-buckling, sail-ripping, almost-drowning, or pirates, or planks, or much alcohol, or all of these are involved -I manage to morph them into positively positive images.

ERP = Enterprise Resource Planning. It's really not much more than what people used to call "Warenwirtschaftssystem", but the name is in English, and it sounds better.

Yes, I hate ship metaphors, too. Unlike real ships, as in "Pirates" or "Master & Commander"...

Specially if there's always the safe harbour (haven?) where it's travelling, or the stabilising anchor, cos, blah, many piratic ambushes were staged within the harbour, I believe, and that stupid anchor can well be the last thing to decide about an unasked for downward movement in a storm.

Real ships, indeed.

:-D

Didn't watch M&C, most of my RL friends who saw it didn't like it at all. Worth watching?

Oh, most definitely worth watching!! Talk of canon!slash - all that movie is really about is the realtionship between that captain and his ship's surgeon, and how the captain breaks a promise and they finally make up, and how they play the violin and the cello together.

Totally cute. Do watch. Also, has pretty James D'Arcy, who's on the icons for my discworld_rpg OC beth_metatronim (you know, Captain Tantony's tame vampire).
