That's the general idea -- but there is a certain level of cosplayer that won't settle for a commercially made costume. You have to make your own costume, or it doesn't count. And for the kind of fans that do simply buy costumes, the things are far too expensive. The overlap of people who are sufficiently enthusiastic to spend that kind of money would be rather small.

(shrug) Still not the issue for the corporation. If they even thought about it. I suppose if someone was seriously into the do-it-yourself thing, they could weave themselves a close imitation. Not a project I'd contemplate.

Actually, if I really got contrary about that and decided that I need a Nu!Trek shirt just because, I'd get the pattern made at Spoonflower -- they have a shiny kind of jersey material.
