This is the next weapon I am going to buy. It is is dirt cheap for what it is, and while it's marketed as a gardening tool, it's actually a kama. The offer is valid from next Monday, but knowing my Norma around the corner, they'll put it out on Saturday evening, just in time for my usual shopping expedition ( Read more... )

Lecture mode on...
It's one of the so called peasant weapons, like nanchaku, tonfa and sai. I think you can learn to use those in kobudo.

Yes, I realised that it was a peasant weapon, even though I didn't know that there is a weapon class called 'Peasant Weapons' in East Asian martial arts.-

And absolutely -- Saturday, or else Monday. We'll have kama and then shall solemnly vow not to commit a blood-bath in our respective slaveries...

Most medieval polearms developed from agricultural tools. Like bills and poleaxes. Seems likely that Japanese peasants would do the same kind of thing. Only being Japanese there's probably more ritual associated with it than "argh soldiers coming, grab anything that might cut."

There are apparently the typical rice-harvesting sickles; very obvious to grab them and resist.
