If you want to go to a really good Café, go to 'Issel' on Hammer Straße. When you come from the shopping part of the city, go to Ludgeri Platz, Hammer Straße is right on the opposite site of the big circle thing so you have to go around. Stay on the right side of the street. Some nice shops there too. 'Issel' is on that side near the next church.
I was actually going to ask you about the café. My mother only knew about some famous old café (Suckhard? Dreigiebelhaus?) that no longer exists, and then soime by some other church which we passed going from the cathedral to Lambertikirche, just now. We had dinner in some old inn (NOT Pinkus Müller!) where I raised the average age quite vigorously, but it was tasty. And there was altbierbowle...
There are two more in the inner city but they are not that good. Just normal. Ché Issel I recommend that you eat through the gateaux shelf from left to right and then again from right to left. If that is not possible I recommend the Balsamico chocolate gateau or the chili one if you prefer it spicey. They sometimes have white chocolate champaign gateau or calvados truffles. The goat cream cheese stuff is very tasty too. If you are looking for real food then there two traditional restaurants somewhere near the Dom. To get there start at the posh merchant houses in the city. On that side of the street follow the street downhill about 250m. On the other side of the street is a small place with the restaurants. Both are named Kiepenkerl (one with the addition small though). There is also a very good Portugese restaurant near the beginning of Hammer Straße, right side. It's called al mare or something like that.
