Trek ficlet, warnings discussion

Jun 25, 2009 12:17

Fandom is having quite the debate over warnings. Though I am definitely on the fringes of this, it's been a real eye-opener for me in a lot of ways; I'd generally thought of myself as anti-warning, but reading the posts and discussions has made me realize that I was coming at this from a very limited perspective. Basically, I don't tend to write ( Read more... )

This sounds very much like what I've come to, right down to realizing that my opposition to warnings was mostly in theory, while in practice I did apparently warn for the one fic I have that has noncon/rape. I've kind of reached the point where I think since it is possible to both allow people who want/need warnings to have them while (I think) sufficiently permitting those (like myself) who prefer to not encounter warnings, I can't think of any reason for myself not to do so.

As little as I write anymore, though, it's probably not likely to even be an issue...

The theory vs. practice concept pretty much sums up where I am with it.

I was chatting it all out with a friend yesterday when I realized quite suddenly that this iteration actually had changed my mind in some ways, and that I had that theory/practice split without ever really realizing it.

The brain is weird.

Really liked this, Spock really would be shocked by the ocean

Fanonically, Vulcan has oceans -- just not many, not large ones and not in the area Spock's from. So I was unsure about whether or not he'd really be that unexposed; OTOH, if he hadn't traveled to those parts of his world, and he might not have, the sight of the Pacific would just be shocking.

Love the ficlet! I would imagine SF shocked him quite a bit!

I'm not a person who is easily upset or freaked by anything. Really. But I consider warnings to be an extension of the fic summary. It helps me to determine what I do and don't want to read. Considering there's so much out there to read, I hate to waste my time reading something that isn't going to interest me. So in that respect, I would like as many warnings as are relevant. But I'm definitely not someone who would go shout at an author for not putting adequate/appropriate warnings on their fic. *shrugs* just my two cents!

(An appreciation of aesthetic qualities is not illogical.)

Indeed, Spock.

This is lovely.
