Star Trek Reboot Drabble Challenge, Mark II

For some reason, it was only yesterday that I realized Memorial Day weekend was upon us. I am sooooo looking forward to a three-day weekend with only one social event to attend. There will be much writing of fanfic and sitting around in sweats. Lolling and indolence! The three weeks after that are going to be INSANE, so I think the indolence is ( Read more... )

Just Doing Her Job

*

She's halfway across campus on her way back from her last exam when she sees Jim Kirk again.

It's the first time they've crossed paths in person since he'd stumbled out the door of her quarters with a "Gaila, see you around" and one last pass at Uhura; somehow, during all the action aboard the Enterprise, they'd never once run into each other. She'd been hip deep in repair work every time he'd passed through her section, and he'd never taken her reports directly. Luckily for him.

"Gaila! Hey," he greets her, all merry blue eyes and open grin as though nothing has changed between them. The jerk. She waits until he catches up with her, then raises a hand and slaps him squarely across his smug face.

It turns out a cadet with only novice fighting skills can surprise the IA for Advanced Hand-to-Hand Combat, if she manages to catch him sufficiently off-guard. He rocks back a step, jaw dropping, and reaches up to touch his stinging cheek. "Ow!"Jim. Hey," she replies sweetly, baring her teeth at him ( ... )

Gaila blinks. "Everyone knows who your father was," she replies, wondering what that had to do with anything. The destruction of the Kelvin had happened four years before she was born, long before she'd been sold to a non-Orion trader and given her freedom, but George Kirk's face had cropped up in every recruitment message, every funding request for advanced military research, and every Starfleet memo about the Romulans for the better part of the last twenty-five years.

"Right," he nods, grimly. It occurs to her suddenly that she can't recall Jim ever speaking of his father before; what must facing George Kirk's killer have been like for him?

"So you know all about people who look at you and see only what they want you to be."

"It's not the same thing," Gaila protests, but her indignation is already fading.

"I know that," he says, his voice rough. "But you have no idea how many people approach me just because of my last name. Because I'm the brilliant bad boy with the famous dead father and they think that if they're ( ... )

... THIS IS AMAZING. Way to make Gaila cool and competent and totally the kind of person who'd be Uhura's friend as well as roommate. HEARTS.

Thank you! I do hope she shows up in the sequel; I wished she'd had more screentime.

Thank you! I really adore Kirk, but it's so much fun exploring him from the POV of equally awesome, but not necessarily sympathetic, characters.

*grin* Thanks.

I'm off on a tangent right now, but if I'm hit by inspiration for their next meeting, I'll post it over at your D00D thread for her.

Thank you! I adore Kirk, but a meeting like this really needs to happen, doesn't it? =)

Oh, what fun! Gaila's smart and tough and not about to be fooled by him again. But she still can see something hopeful in all of this. I love how well you've captured Kirk in this, too -- fast on his feet and honest enough, when he needs to be.

Excellent fic!

Thank you! Yes, Gaila is awesome; I was so glad they hadn't set him up with someone young and blonde. I adore Kirk, and he has many excellent qualities, but they're not necessarily showing to best advantage at this point in his life, and he could use a kick now and again. =)

Thank you! Yeah, that was one of the few things I wished they'd mentioned in the movie, whether or not she made it back. She's definitely going to stay on the Enterprise in my personal canon, and crop up to fluster Jim on a regular basis.

Thank you!

There's so much in this new universe to explore; I had no idea how much I wanted to play with these characters until they cleared out all the filled-in places in their histories and gave us room to start anew. =)
