Hahahaha, I never thought of that. In these cases with a sci-fi show, the explanation that writers usually come up with is "Er... science?" anyway, so ha, whatever.
I always overlook plot holes and whatnot. 'Course, I'm a Doctor Who fan, so I'm quite used to it. ^.^
Things like this tend to jump out at me, I'm annoyingly hyper observant though I don't tend to mind the things I catch my love for whatever I'm watching is simply too strong ^_^
Actually... yes! As far as I know there are only three times in SG-1 where we see the stargate activated without any DHD. The first you saw in 'Children of the Gods' by Apophis. The second is in 'Enigma' when Lya (sp?) comes through the gate for the Tolan. Lastly is in '1969' (second season) when the team goes too far into the future and meet Casandra when she's really old
( ... )
*laughs* good times! I never had a problem with Lya's reactivating of the Stargate the Nox are far more advanced than even the Gou'ald. And the Same goes for Cassandra in 1969.
As for Apophis I'm definitely of the opinion it was author's convenience!
You were definitely channeling a little Sam in that. ^_~ as I said, good times! ^_^
I think towards the end of the series (or maybe even the movies) one of the goa'uld has a wrist device that works as a mini-dhd, so I think we have to assume that Apohis had that technology as well. But yes, it was a plot hole for a long, long time, and common for the early days, I think. I'm actually pretty sure there's unexplained two-way travel through a wormhole on one occassion, as well.
*laughs* I love the fact that by not really addressing it ever in that episode or the ones that follow they can come up with a solution like that years down the road and it works! ^_~ I'm going to keep my eye opened for that wrist DHD
