What are your interests?

I don't have any. There. Loathe me. I don't care.

I got asked this question the other day and it threw me off. I can't remember the last time someone asked me that. It's like going to a stuffy party where people ask what you do.

I was thinking more about this question, and one of the reasons it bugs me is because people use it as a shortcut for taking the time to get to know a person. They ask this question as if who someone is can be summed up in a few words about their hobbies.

You have lots of interests, but you are too interesting of a person to describe them all in a few seconds. That's why we all love you!

Aw, I love you!

Someone else said that they might have been asking so that the question could be brought back on them...which, gives them a chance to brag about themselves. Heh. I can totally see this being the case as the questioner had plenty of specifics to give.

While I agree with the comment here, I'll still reserve the right to loathe you. It's what I do. ;)

I actually despise questions like this because the person asking has no idea what it means and has absolutely no interest in your answer. It's the poor person's version of "Where do you summer?" It is intended to fill space because you're both standing there.

Unfortunately that is all that most people are looking for out of life. Perhaps then the best answer to "What are your interests?" is "I'm not sure what they are exactly but I know you're not one of them." and just walk away. Wouldn't that be fun?

I'll try it at my next cocktail party and let you know how it goes.
