Chapter Seven
[Erica’s POV]
Callie and I sat in distracted silence, both sipping our drinks. “It’s a great club.” Callie smiled at me. “I can’t believe we never came here with all our dancing adventures.”
I smiled. “Yeah well I’m pretty sure we tried everywhere else.” She smiled. Callie sipped her drink and nodded slowly.
We talked about everything from the weather to darts when finally Lola reappeared at the table. “Hey Er, mind if I?” She grabbed my drink and quickly downed it. “Come on guys, you should hit the dance floor.” Callie smiled and stood up, I hesitated but followed. We reached the middle of the dance floor and started dancing. A man danced behind me and held my waist as we danced. I saw the upset and jealous expression on Callie’s face and so I turned and smiled politely before moving out of his grasp. I don’t know why but I sent a reassuring smile to Callie. She smiled back at me and we danced together. The guy was persistent and took a hold of my waist again. She turned around and smiled at him.
I didn’t want to dance with this guy, he wasn’t Callie but I knew that I couldn’t not dance with anyone for the whole night so I let him touch me. I smiled as he smiled back at me and I couldn’t help but notice his brown eyes. They were so familiar. There was an almost identical pair dancing only meters away from me. I turned away from him getting all the proof I needed that I didn’t want to dance with him, that I couldn’t dance with him, not when I could be dancing with Callie.
When I turned though she wasn’t dancing where I saw her before, in fact I couldn’t see her in the club anywhere. I left the dance floor and went searching for her. I tried the bathrooms but when I called out her name there came no reply. I did however hear a muffled cry then the sound of retching. “Cal, are you in here?” I called out to her. I heard a familiar cry and banged on the bathroom door where it had come from. “Callie, let me in.”
“I’m fine. Don’t worry. Just pregnancy hormones.” I heard between her sobs.
I couldn’t believe how upset she was and I didn’t really know why. Was it because I was dancing with that guy? Was it something else entirely?
“Cal, you have to come out, you’re making yourself sick.” I heard a strangled cry before I heard the door unlock. I rushed in and tried to pick Callie off the floor, who clung to me in tears. I could barely understand her through her sobs and ramblings. “Don’t move on…. My fault… big fat pregnant bitch… over me…. Sorry, so sorry.” Callie cried and I held her. A woman walked in as I was holding her trying to calm her down but walked out abruptly.
“Shh, Cal. You need to calm down. I’m going to take you home okay but I need you to calm down so I can do so.” I asked her to listen to my breathing. “Cal, breathe with me, okay? .” “In, out. Again, in, out. Again, in and out,” Eventually her breathing slowed down and she relaxed into me. I got to my feet and helped her stand. “Come on I think I need to get you home.” Callie just nodded and stared at her feet, keeping eye contact on the floor.
I saw Lola dancing on the floor and I waved her over to me. She whispered in the guys ear and made her way over to us as I motioned for Callie to sit down at a table near by. I stepped away from Callie as Lola approached me. “Hey, sis. What’s wrong?”
“I’m going to take Callie home, she’s uh… not feeling well.”
Lola smiled. “Okay. I’ll come with you.”
We all headed out. Lola grabbed the keys and offered to drive home claiming that she hadn’t had much to drink. I nodded gratefully and climbed in the back with Callie. She looks exhausted and fell asleep on my shoulder almost immediately. I wrapped my arm around her and she fell closer to me, sighing in her sleep. Her hand grabbed at my arm and I smiled as she snuggled closer to me.
I could see Lola smirking at me in the mirror. “We’re almost there I told her.” She laughed at my obvious attempt to stop her from asking questions. “I know where you live Er.” I nodded at her and tightened my grasp on Callie. I could feel her breathing against me and I would give anything to be more than her friend in this moment but then I remember how she hurt me. How I promised I would never give her that power again. We arrived at my house before I realized that I didn’t have a room for Callie to sleep in as Lola was in my only guest room. “Oh crap!”
This woke Callie up and caused Lola to look at me worried. “What’s wrong?” They both asked.
“Uh, nothing.” I helped Callie out of the car and took her into my room. She was too exhausted to notice and fell asleep on the bed immediately. I grabbed some sweats and changed her into them before pulling the doona over her. She looked so peaceful and beautiful as she cuddled up to my pillow while she slept. I kissed her forehead. “Sweet dreams Cal.”
