So I had my first Japanese Culture, Literature, and Film class today. First, the professor is very cool. He's this grizzled, technologically illiterate old guy who not only taught at Tokyo University but brought two guys back with him. (Satoshi and Rei; Rei looks a lot like Sotaro. I kept expecting him to yell, "OSU!") He told us to call him Ted-sensei. *_*
We watched a movie today, and from the looks of the syllabus we're going to be spending a lot of time watching movies. Here's a list:
Ugetsu dir. Mizoguchi Kenji (what we watched today)
Rashomon dir. Kurosawa Akira (Ted-sensei apparently really likes Kyo Machiko but who doesn't)
The Ballad of Narayama dir. Imamura Shohei
Tokyo Story dir. Ozu Yasujiro
Harakiri dir. Kobayashi Masaki
Patriotism
Zatoichi dir. Kitano Takeshi
Tanpopo dir. Itami Juzo
Yojimbo dir. Kurosawa Akira
Akira dir. Otomo Kazuo (I can tell you right now that I'm going to be yelling along with the movie. "TETSUOOO!" "KANEDAAAAAA!")
Spirited Away dir. Miyazaki Hayao
Go dir. Yukisada Isao (I spent a couple seconds staring at the syllabus before realizing, O HAI, YEAH, THAT'S THE ONE KUDO KANKURO WROTE THE SCREENPLAY FOR)
So yes, Ted-sensei is made of awesome and win. Since he also heads both tutorials, he had everyone introduce themselves and explain why they're taking the course. Basically it was thirty people being decreasingly embarrassed about their love for anime. I was second to last, so my little introduction included me exclaiming, "GIANT ROBOTS!" which provoked another girl to yell, "GUNDAAAAAM!" Most people mentioned watching Dragonball when they were little, and a few girls mentioned Sailor Moon, but I was the only one who named Samurai Pizza Cats, which was my introduction to anime at the tender age of three. It did, however, provoke some responding cheers. Yeah, I think we're all going to get along really well. ^.^
Since the last couple weeks of the course focus on anime, Ted-sensei mentioned he thinks it'd be cool to get some people who are really into anime to do presentations on the precise area they're interested in. lolwut? If I'd know that I could've put my own course together! Seriously, think of the possibilities. The Voices Behind The Squeaky Noises: Knowing Your Yaoi Seiyuu. Who The Hell Do You Think I Am?!: The Most Epic Lines Come From Mecha Pilots. Hare Hare Yukai: Catchy Song, Cultural Phenomenon. And of course, The Prince Of Tennis: Manga, Anime, Movies, Musicals, Way Of Life. (This isn't even touching on anime memes -- think of the possibilities that lie behind the Nico Nico Medley alone!)
This is shaping up to be a pretty damn epic year.
