So a guy in my class asked me out on a date today. I was so completely blindsided that I asked if I could have some time to come up with an answer, but the more I think about it, the more my reaction is confirmed to be a solid O_O ( Read more... )

You can always try one date and see if it goes anywhere! The only thing I would say, from extremely awkward personal experience, is to do your best to keep the guy from making assumptions or jumping to conclusions about your feelings or the relationship between you. i.e. one date =/= We're Dating, seeing where this goes =/= you have Deep Feelings for him, etc. Life is not a Shinkai Makoto film and I've found nerdier guys to be particularly susceptible to making that mistake.

The thing about testing the waters is, though, I have pretty much zero experience in the dating area so I'm doubtful a date would make anything much clearer to me. I'm also pretty used to the idea of being a non-dating-person (okay it makes sense in my head) so part of it is also figuring out if I want to disrupt the lifestyle I'm used to (err pretend that makes sense okay).

Also I keep thinking of the time I was really bummed out for Starcraft-related reasons, and his idea of trying to cheer me up was to say that Starcraft's not worth getting worked up over because it's "just a game". The problem here not being that he doesn't care about SC, that's neither here nor there, but that he was so dismissive about something that I obviously care about quite a lot.

IDK I feel like I'm being really contrary, asking for help and then being totally disagreeable about everything, sorry. Augh, I don't know what I'm saying; I'm confusing myself. >_<

I say go for it! Even if it doesn't work out, or you can still only see him as a friend, then at least you'll know. You won't be left wondering "what if I'd gone out with him..." later.
