It's kind of mindboggling how many BL mangaka were/are Slam Dunk doujinshika as well. XD Off the top of my head: Kodaka Kazuma (Mitsui/Kogure), Yamane Ayano (Rukawa/Sakuragi, including, ah, this infamous volume), Minami Ozaki (Sendoh/Rukawa), Motoni Modoru (not sure but I think Rukawa/Sakuragi), Youka Nitta (various combinations of Rukawa, Sakuragi, and Mitsui XD), Minase Masara (hilariously enough, gen), and Matoh Sanami i.e. the author of Fake (no idea). Oh early 90s, the golden age of Shonen Jump doujinshi. ♥
I'm v. fond of Yoshinaga's in particular, though. >_>
SORRY ABOUT THE SONG LYRICS. only not really. :D Now I have to know - what prompted "we aren't making this up, it actually happens"? XD
Much to my amazement I am actually not familiar with many of those fine ladies! Although I do know Yamane by reputation, Minase from Uso to Kiss, and Kodaka from her massive amounts of Tenipuri doujin. lolll I am a little worried that I seem to recognize that doujin cover...
It's cool. XD First was your part about "Kingdom pseudo-Ruritanian romance subplot now seems so... wtf. Secret princesses? Lost siblings? 19th century European uniforms? [...] A United Earth Alliance feels threatened by a tiny Scandinavian kingdom of pacifists?" And then there was my own remark about Dragon Ball and "Oolong using the Dragon Balls to wish for panties." JAPAN IS SO WEIRD.
I had to write way too many margin notes about yaoi. v_v;
Sometimes I forget that I have spent too much of my life reading yaoi manga.... XD They are as a group famous for some BL milestones:
Ozaki Minami - Zetsuai/Bronze Nitta Youka - Haru wo Daiteita (and many, many others) Matoh Sanami - FAKE Kodaka Kazuma - Kizuna (plus, as you say, the Tenipuri doujinshi) Yamane Ayano - Viewfinder
Minase and Motoni are less well known but Minase is a favorite among scanlators and Motoni is, omg, I don't even know where to begin - her works are sooo not your standard BL (for which reason she's had publishing problems before) and generally cult classics. (Check out Shiikugakari Rika and/or Supersonic Angel Engine if you're curious.)
I'm in the same boat, rest assured, I think I'm just more familiar with newer names, i.e. Sakuraga Mei, Sakuragi Yaya, Kyuugou, Yamagata Satomi, Tenzen Momoko, Eiki Eiki, and of course my personal hero Zaou Taishi/Tsuda Mikiyo. ♥
Now that you mention it I have heard of most of those series! Though I can't say I know much about them. Kizuna is about yakuza, FAKE is about cops, Haru wo Daiteita is about porn stars, and Zetsuai... IDK, but I've definitely heard the title before. Is that right? Ahahaha for someone who's all "OMG KNOW YOUR FANDOM ROOTS!" I am really lacking in knowledge of the classics. Do I get points for having seen the Kaze to Ki no Uta OVA? *gives up*
I actually have a folder of Minase's stuff sitting on my harddrive that I just haven't gotten around to yet hahaha whoops. And you already have me interested in Motoni, ahaha my homework's never going to get done~... Do you think my East Asian History professor would take "I didn't do my reading because I was reading up on THE VERY IMPORTANT HISTORY OF YAOI" as an
