men are from mars, women are from venus...eh? he's a guy, and his brain works differently - he may not being seeing how upsetting this all is to you and why. you're a great gf, and one with the right to be upset about all this. but all the same, ben is right, you two have to be your own people. he is drifting. it's part of who he is. so be supportive - but also be honest. tell him that you wish him luck (I assume that he's going to be in some sort of competition), and that you're excited for him...but also tell him that yeah, you're kind of sad that he's going, and that you'll really miss him. and if you can make his boy-brain understand how much his phone calls would mean...surely he'd do it.
