3. Long Awaited Miracle

It had been a long hard day filled with mountains of paperwork, many way overdue deadlines, much cursing and one upset bottle of ink which in turn caused the staining of one newly washed white haori. Ukitake couldn't help but feel sorry for whoever succeeded him as captain of the 13th division, they would be getting a well worn haori possibly complete with blood and ink stains! He smiled to himself at the thought of it and mentally told himself to cheer up, it could have been worse, he could have spent another day in that miserable room of his. He was so lost in his train of thought that he didn't hear his office door open and a person enter his room until said person had both arms wrapped firmly and protectively around his waist. He almost died on the spot, he yelled loudly only to have a hand clamp over his mouth, 'What the hell!' he thought,
“Ssh! Baka! If I knew you were going to react like that I would have sent a messenger ahead to warn you I was coming!” Shunsui spoke into his ear,
He released Ukitake's mouth and turned his friend around to face him, Ukitake did not look impressed in the slightest, Shunsui grinned and thumped him playfully on the shoulder,
“Do you always yell like that when you get taken by surprise?” he asked suggestively
Ukitake's jaw dropped and he began to go a shade of red. His friend's reaction caused Shunsui to almost drop to the floor as he laughed raucously.
“That isn't funny, not one little bit” Ukitake replied,
but his words had no effect on the rising colour on his cheeks. Shunsui wrapped his arms around the slightly shorter shinigami and pulled him close to his body in a tight embrace, so that Ukitake's head rested on his chest, Ukitake sighed and Shunsui placed a hand behind Ukitake's head, stroking the long, soft, silky hair.
“I have always wanted to hear that you know” Shunsui said
Ukitake sighed, it was a frustrated sigh, “I know Shun, but there's nothing I can do about it, we talked about this”
“Ssh, I know, I know Jyuu, but a guy can't help wondering” he replied, he placed a kiss on top of the pale head of hair.
He felt Jyuushiro's arms sliding around his own waist and hugging him back, it made him feel all warm and fuzzy inside. He knew Jyuushiro didn't believe him, but this really was enough for him, if he could feel this feeling every day for the rest of his life he would die a happy man, regardless of the sex.
“So what else have you got to do today?” Shunsui asked
“Gotta go down the 4th division” Ukitake said drearily
“Want some company?”
Ukitake smiled, “That sounds great”

They took their time walking down to the 4th division, on the way Ukitake wondered idly whether or not to take Shunsui's hand, but he figured Shunsui hadn't reached for his hand so he probably didn't want to hold hands.
They arrived at the 4th division, it was protocol now, if he had an attack the minute he was well enough he had to come to the 4th for another check up, Ukitake hated coming to the 4th division. In a way he felt bad about it, he considered Unohana-taicho a good friend and felt rude at dreading a visit to her division.
Unohana was waiting for them in the doorway,
“Ah Ukitake-taicho you've brought Kyoraku-taicho with you”
She had heard rumours over the past few weeks about the two men, but she hadn't believed the rumours until now, she could almost feel the tension between them, read the chemistry between them by their body language, she was a doctor after all. Ukitake merely nodded his response,
“You don't mind hanging around for a while do you Kyoraku-taicho while I talk to Ukitake?” she addressed the tall shinigami,
“Actually if you don't mind I'd like him to be with me”
Unohana stood stunned for a moment, then she shrugged “If you would like to Kyoraku-taicho?”
Shunsui smiled, “Sure” he said
Then Ukitake felt something take his hand, he looked down to see Shunsui's hand enclosing his and he beamed up at the other man.

Inside a private ward Ukitake removed his white haori and his black kimono so that he was just wearing his hakama, he then lay down on top of a nearby bed. Shunsui marvelled at his pale white skin, it was flawless and toned, thanks to the disease Ukitake had lost most of his muscle mass, the result was a very effeminate figure. Ukitake blushed slightly as he felt Shunsui's eyes roam over his body, but Shunsui just took his hand and gave it a slight squeeze to reassure him. Unohana had disappeared from the room, but she now reappeared wheeling in a large machine that seemed to tower over her, she brought it over to the bedside and adjusted it so that a large light shone over Ukitake's torso, a small set of cross-hairs hovered over his heart.
“Kyoraku-taicho, we both have to leave the room”
Shunsui looked to Ukitake and Ukitake nodded at him, so he turned and followed Unohana out of the room.
Out in the hallway Unohana explained that Ukitake had to have an x-ray and it wouldn't be very good for their health if they were in the room at the same time. After a short while they heard Ukitake call out and they both re entered the room. Shunsui moved straight to Ukitake while Unohana began to wheel the contraption out of the room,
“I'll be right back with the results” she told them.

When Unohana rejoined the couple, Ukitake had redressed and was now sitting on the bed, Shunsui by his side, she smiled at them
“I have some good news” she said
Suddenly both of the men swung their full attention onto her, she smiled and cleared her throat
“You're lungs are looking extremely healthy, well a lot better than they have in a long time”
Ukitake looked at Shunsui who was beaming back at him
“But that's not the best part” the female captain continued, “Isshin Kurosaki sent me these drugs from the real world, they could make you non-contagious”
Ukitake gasped and felt Shunsui's grip on his hand tighten,
“Now you have to take them for a few weeks, but effectively after 2 weeks you should no longer be contagious”
Ukitake threw himself at Unohana and wrapped his arms around her,
“Oh Retsu! Thank you! Thank you!” he said,
small tears began to form in the corners of his eyes, he pulled away from the embrace
“Don't thank me, you need to thank Kurosaki”
“And I will the very first chance I get” Ukitake replied
“I have an idea” Shunsui interjected, “Why don't we go to Karakura town in two weeks time, when you are no longer contagious and hopefully well enough to travel and thank him in person”
“That's a great idea!” Ukitake said, now throwing himself at Shunsui.

They arrived back at the 13th division late that night having spent many excited hours chatting to Unohana about the new drugs, Shunsui had a feeling Ukitake wouldn't be dreading his next trip to the 4th division quite so much. When they reached the door to Ukitake's quarters Ukitake stopped and turned to face him,
“Um...do you...want to stay the night?” he asked a light blush rising on his cheeks,
Shunsui took Jyuushiro's chin in his hand and tilted it up so he could look into his eyes,
“I would love to”
Then he kissed Ukitake on each cheek. Ukitake laced his hands behind Shunsui's neck and stared up at him, unsure of what to do,
“What's wrong?” Shunsui asked
“I was just wondering if I should kiss you” he replied
Shunsui shrugged and bent down to press his lips against Jyuushiro's, he could feel Ukitake melting into the kiss, so he stuck his tongue out and gently swiped it over Ukitake's bottom lip, causing the pale haired captain to moan and part his lips to the intrusion.
When they pulled away, panting for air, Ukitake spoke,
“You know, I'm still contagious”
Shunsui smiled at him “I know” he said kissing him on the forehead.
