QOTD: What's up with breakfast?

This is a scam, right? I wake up, I'm not at all hungry, and now I'm expected to wolf down a pile of eggs and pancakes? Seriously? While skipping breakfast may be an easy way to start training yourself to fast, I think that skipping snacks is more important. I've found that I can permit myself to eat breakfast, but once I'm done with that I must immediately stop eating everything but water for a good amount of time. If I continue to snack, the eating continues, and eventually spirals out of control. The lesson seems to be, eat when you're eating, don't eat when you're not eating.

With exercise, the advice is a little different. You should definitely "snack on exercise." That is to say, keep your general energy output going all day. Don't sit for long stretches and then sprint for five minutes. Rather, keep standing up and moving around as much as possible, so that you slowly build up to more and more energy output over the course of the day.

According to new research published in New York Times, executive control is stronger in the morning. E.G. your ability to override default actions with the brain's free-will "veto" power. They think this might have something to do with mental exhaustion and strategies for taking risk (overriding judgments) when you can most manage it versus when you might be less able to, and want to play it safer. Another strategy, however, is to change the default decisions, or make your decisions in advance, or at least realize when you are least able to make good decisions.
