2. The equation of time is not actually an equation. This is an older sense of the word "equation," that doesn't refer to a short mathematical expression with an equal sign, but rather the sense of "equating" one thing to another. I've acquired a nautical almanac and found the sunrise/set time tables. I have yet to try doing the calculations, but it certainly seems simple enough. The main reason I wanted to do something like this is so I could A) get the feeling of validity in the numbers, instead of relying on calculators, which are sometimes confusing to use and don't explain their method or results very well. And B) I want to write my own fancy calculator that will take the data a step further and give me the information I'm really interested in. (YES, it has something to do with my skin...:)
