1. Ring
It settled in his ears and conscious slowly, like molasses in a jar, choking his heart in an invisible grasp as he watched the capital burn to the ground (something young America had worked so hard to create); to this day England cannot rid himself of the scream the young man had made at the sight of his world falling to ashes because of someone who had helped to create him.
2. Hero
“Remember, I’m the hero,” America exclaimed, that moronic grin in place.
3. Memory
Arthur glared at that green woman of America’s as she greeted all the hopeless and damned to freedom; he still remembered the taste in his mouth he had felt upon hearing the news that the French bastard had given his Alfred a symbol that rivaled the Eifel Tower and Big Ben--his wondrous clock and his America.
4. Box
Even if the answer was simple and more than obvious, Alfred always concocted the most hair-brained of schemes and Arthur pretended like it irked him, but in reality, he was pleased at the young country’s out-of-the-box creativity.
5. Run
He waited for his guardian countless days and months in between visits, wondering if Britain had forgotten him and just how long it would take to leave his wild lands and find the noble Englishman-- could he really swim that far and run that fast?
6. Hurricane
A royal typhoon of arrogant self-appreciation and hidden worries, that was the only way England could describe the rambunctious America.
7. Wings
Instead of feathers or a propeller, America donned a cape and a courage that left his quiet big brother to watch after his shadow.
8. Cold
Winter was cold in both countries, but the heavy silence that passed between them as America glared (broken-heartedly) at the black oil poisoning his blue, blue oceans (nearly colored to match his ungodly eyes) and England nervously devised apologies inside his skull, they both briefly wondered if this was the re-beginning of their end.
9. Red
Regardless of how many times Alfred tried to deny any sort of connection with the elder country, England couldn’t help but smile at the bright blue, white, and red inside the Democracy’s flag--just the same as his.
10. Drink
Typically Britain embarrassed himself whenever they drank together, but on this particular night America grew quiet and rested his head on Arthur’s shoulder, speaking softly: “Hey, old man…tell me a story.”
11. Midnight
The loud bells of Big Ben were nothing in comparison to the pounding of blood inside his ears as his taller and all-grown former colony bent down and kissed him hard on the mouth--there was no such thing as gentle whenever it came to his beautiful boy.
12. Temptation
It took all that Alfred had not to let his fingers stay overtop England’s as they exchanged paperwork; it really did.
13. View
The vast landscape and untouched rivers could never measure up to the young United States.
14. Music
The young boy stared at the box for a good long moment before shutting it and handing the musical device back to his caretaker; America had never been one for slow songs and sentiments.
15. Silk
Although Arthur found his other half’s hair to be much more appeasing, he never once raised argument whenever Alfred nuzzled his disarrayed straw-colored hair and told him that he loved how soft it felt.
16. Cover
His young country had always been talented at hiding his problems and worries behind a flashy smile and colorful tongue.
17. Promise
He never told Britain that he’d stay with him for always, but the desperate kisses and tender caresses said what the proud man could not.
18. Dream
Sometimes Alfred would entertain the idea of a future in which he was still British claim; sometimes.
19. Candle
Just when the island nation thought that he was finished with the pompous country, a warmth would spread through his stomach like a lighter to wick and he’d surrender to those aggressive fingertips again and again.
20. Talent
Alfred had a beautiful singing voice that would only appear once he was certain England was asleep and far from consciousness.
21. Silence
England stood beside his dying King’s bed, listening (with tears inside his eyes) as the old codger rambled himself to death, “How are my colonies faring…my beautiful colonies-”
22. Journey
Britain was going to see him as his equal some day, he had to, or else everything would have been for nothing.
23. Fire
And his beautiful towers spiraled to the ground, his people screamed, and for the first time ever, America felt truly abandoned.
24. Strength
Constant world conferences only encouraged the ache in his heart with each laugh and word out of that imbecile’s mouth.
25. Mask
“B-but I’m the he-hero,” America wept into Arthur’s shirt, his body shaking with sadness as his friends slowly left him behind.
26. Ice
Arthur was quite the prude until Alfred had him behind closed doors, clothes forgotten, and back arched in excitement.
27. Fall
Britain had been doomed the first time he had ever heard the small boy speak: “Hey there, mister!”
28. Forgotten
The toy soldiers and rifles were nestled in the darkest corners of his storage room, but the lack of dust and fading paint was proof enough that they were far from abandoned.
29. Dance
No one could skirt around a serious topic quite like his cocky America.
30. Body
Battles and rough histories scarred both their flesh but the bruises and red blotches from their hidden escapades were far deeper and memorable.
31. Sacred
Why America treasured his idiotic catchphrases and hamburgers, the great UK would never know.
32. Farewells
They never said goodbye, it was always a ‘hello’ in greeting and a palm squeeze in parting-- actually saying ‘farewell’ made parting resolute and neither would accept such a disgraceful defeat.
33. World
According to Jones, the world began and ended with himself --Arthur silently, and whole-heartedly, agreed.
34. Formal
“Would you care to come for a visit and a spot of tea, Alfred?”
35. Fever
“Ohhhh Doctor Kirkland, I do believe I’ve come down with a terrible bout of the flu…help me out of my clothes and into a hot bath, would you?”
36. Laugh
America had a demented and tacky sense of humor, something England found so-very-delightful.
37. Lies
And through water-painted eyes and a shaky throat, Arthur screamed at the top of his lungs: “Say whatever you wish, Alfred F. Jones, it doesn’t bother me in the slightest.”
38. Forever
“You’ll always be my wonderful America…always.”
39. Overwhelmed
Whenever America was stressed he’d grow quiet and pinch the bridge of his nose (not that Arthur knew or cared or anything like that).
40. Whisper
It never failed; whenever America would topple after him, Britain would vaguely hear the younger country murmur a soft: “God bless the Queen,” against English skin.
41. Wait
“Keep waitin’ for an apology, British dude, it ain’t happenin’.”
42. Talk
“Ain’t you gone yet, old man-” America teased, his nose crinkled in amusement; England howled, clenching his hands and teeth before yelling to the otherwise empty room: “BLOODY HELL, AMERICA, IT’S ‘AREN’T YOU GONE YET?!’”
43. Search
Alfred always turned to him for answers whenever it came to ‘them’, unfortunately he didn’t have any either.
44. Hope
Someday Britain would forgive him.
45. Eclipse
With rain as their masks both countries cried as the newly independent Democracy whispered for them alone to hear: “What happened…you were so big back then-”
46. Gravity
And as much as he tried not to(or at least said he did), England would forever be pulled back to that charismatic lunk-head time and time again; he needed Alfred just as much as the younger superpower needed him.
47. Highway
Two separate paths that always met somewhere in the middle and ended together, that was the story of the iconic United State of America and Great Britain.
48. Unknown
If America had actually sat down on Busby’s chair, would he have really, truly, ceased to exist all together?
49. Lock
Alfred always locked his storage room whenever he was finished ruffling through old memories- no one would steal his precious past.
50. Breathe
Arthur loved these moment the most (when they were spent and still wrecklessly attached to one another); they were tied together in the their breaths, space, bodies, and time-- only then could they be one whole piece again.
