Can you recommend some way to learn enough to be able to navigate basic life situations (hotels, restaurants, airports) without becoming extremely confused? I think a lot of people in the city I'm going to will speak english, but it would be nice to be able to order in restaurants and maybe talk to the line operators at the plant without sounding stoopid. Also I cannot roll my r's to save my life, so tips on that would be much appreciated.

rolling the r's is either something you can do or you can't. i've had spanish teachers who couldn't even do it well. don't worry about that.

people who speak spanish will appreciate the effort and know you obviously don't speak it.

phrases to live by:

¿Dónde está el baño/el hotel/el restaurante? - where is the bathroom/hotel/restaurant

¿Cuánto cuesta…? - how much does ___ cost?

Quiero… - I want…

Una cerveza por favor - beer please

i also recommend a book like spanish for gringos. i have it and it's fabulous. it's easy to read and it's basic.
