To those who are mortified by the acts of animal cruelty we hear of through the Michael Vick case..

What are you having for dinner tonight?

I'm just sayin.

Are we selective with regards to who we feel for..and whose suffering we deem less horrific?

Yes, we are.

I think it should be agreed that suffering is suffering.

:)
I somehow figured you'd respond, and I appreciate that you did so.

I'm not suggesting that you should feel guilty.
I'm making the point that we are selective with our compassion.
I acknowledge it. Do you not?

Well, I never called you. .or anyone, for that matter, a hypocrite. It's never my intention to assault one's way of life. However, I think I posed a fair question, and make a valid point. The fact that you can eat a steak tomorrow night, but feel sick to your stomach in response to what happened to those poor dogs. .makes my point. You select who you're compassionate towards. The cow's suffering is deemed less reprehensible through your contribution to the industry that kills them..and through truly inhumane methods, trust.

I appreciate that you can, at least, see both sides of things.

i eat meat and i don't feel guilty about it. a cow is not my companion. we humans are omnivores by nature, if you make the choice to alter your nature, that is in fact your choice.

i do feel compassion for companion animals, who, by nature of human emotion, we form bonds with.

that is why we are selective with our compassion.

i guess that wasn't your question, though. to answer it, i am having tuna steaks.

That is exactly what I said.

We select who/what we feel compassion for. The line you draw between animals, segregating species into companion and non-companion, or I guess.. food and science is a blurry one. .companion animals are used in animal testing. Humans establish connections with animals that likely exist outside your sphere of 'companion' animals. [i.e. rodents]

We are selective with our compassion because it is advantageous.

[I haven't talked with you in forever. What's good, K?]

i am equally as selective about how i feel compassion for humans, though.

everything is good these days. it's summer, how can anything be bad?

Oppressive heat's pretty bad.
Well, I don't like it.
Haha.

But, good. Glad to hear that.

I had that same thought process while sitting w/ meat-eating friends watching a program on genetically mutated foods. They showed this sterile pig farm where people had to walk around in protective suits since the animals have no immune system, it was all so repulsive and left everyone saying how they can't imagine eating pork now. I wanted to be like just pork? This happens to all of your food!

That being said- I would prefer a person to eat meat than to watch animals mutilate each other for sport/entertainment. I know it is generally the same thing but I do find the latter to be slightly more violent/disturbing as a hobby.

I agree. i do agree that many feel closer to this situation because it involves man's best friend, and while i do agree that there are other animals tortured before they go on my plate, the side of this that disgusts me most is that people were betting on this. as if taking a way a life is some form of entertainment. i feel the same disgust towards animal fights the way I do towards bum fights. how someone could participate in such a practice breaks my heart.

It breaks mine, too. It's so disturbing. I don't understand how anyone can justify it, let alone find it entertaining.

Sickos.
