That isn't where Jim is, by the way. He's loitering, avoiding going to his next class becuause ew. Scott takes it and Jim feels like today is a good day to piss the guy off by not going to class.

So he's found himself a sunny little corner where he can watch the girls world go past. He might have a book in his hands, but that's probably your imagination. Jim? Studying? Never.

When the new teacher rounds a corner he watches him out of the corner of his eye. The guy's a little weird, sure. But in a school of mutants? That's nothing.]

So yeah, he knows about George Kirk the big damn hero. So he knows Jim by stalking proxy.
