I was initially wary of the pairing, but you sold me on it.
But what I adored about the fic in general was Neal's analysis of friendships and bonds and future 'jobs.'

oh, thank you so much for writing this! it's totally wonderful! what a great couple they are, and I love the character details you give them--Kono breaking up with her last boyfriend during a high speed chase! being so amazingly badass she doesn't need rescuing! And Neal's thoughtful ambivalence about leaving NYC--Peter is practically a character here even though he doesn't appear.

And the idea of Neal painting Kono is so delicious--it deserves an epilogue or something (possibly with a higher rating ;))

Oh, this is so much fun. I can see Neal wanting to get away after the anklet comes off, to try to find out who he really is. I can see Neal/Kono, it fits somehow, really nicely. And I can see Chin being the overprotective brother (well, cousin, but he acts more like brother, doesn't he?) when Kono is in trouble.

I don't watch Hawaii 5-0, but when I saw the pairing, I had to read this, because SO MUCH PRETTY. Neal and Kono are lovely together. <3 And I love how Neal actually volunteers to help with the case, and how he comes to the realisation that he really does want go back to New York. Oh Neal. <33
