Each style has its place, if the page/comic had a primarily solid open background, i.e. Andi Watson, I could see the more round balloon as it would break up the panel and have room to breathe. Whereas pages with a lot of detail and whatnot happening in the panels, the more oblong would appeal more. I do like the calligraphic stroke more than the plain line. Course I'm saying this on three hours of sleep and no coffee, so hopefully that makes sense ;)
I can see going either way on the line, depending on the art style the balloons are supporting. Do you want to complement what's going on in the page, or provide a contrast?
But definitely oblong over circular, for the reasons stated above.
I like the oblong because the circle wastes too much space.. it's too much whitespace, I can see that really messing with the artistic aspect of a comic.
And I think the variable-width lines are fare more dynamic and attractive to the eye.

circular for a single character would be okay, but an entire page could get annoying. the calligraphic stroke adds just enough to set it apart.
