I think that I've been having a failure to post lately for a few reasons. A major one is that work is keeping me busy and keeping me away from computers (unlike the kind of busy that college kept me

I use a foam-only mattress on the firm side from some foam company on Canal St. You go and poke at various foam samples, then tell them what size you want and they make it into a mattress for you. I didn't pay for it myself, but my parents tell me it's significantly cheaper than normal mattresses, and I've always been happy with it.
Well, using Google Maps and looking for "foam" on Canal St yields the following business,
Canal Rubber Supl Co Inc 329 Canal St, New York, NY (212) 226-7339
and the street view does appear to match what I recall. I'm checking with my dad to see for sure.
I'm not sure if they do delivery, I think we've always picked up w/ a van or other large car. Unfortunately b/c of the size of the place it's not possible to sit on mattresses, you just have a 1' x 1' x mattress thickness you can fondle and hope to pick the right soft/hardness. I've picked out two mattresses from them in my life, both I wanted on the harder side and successfully achieved it, but I definitely did wish I could actually try out the mattresses before deciding. The mattresses lasted quite a while IMO (the first one has been in my NYC bedroom for the last 15 years or more, my current one I got in 2000), and the only complaint I have is that every couple years it's worth rotating and/or flipping it to prevent a hump in the middle.
I really liked shopping at Sleepy's on a Monday where they make you kickin deals if you're ready to walk out without something, but would like to walk out with something that day if the price is right. Like 50% discounts and such.
I like my Kingsdown Queen bed and it cost much less than the sticker price, including delivery. Though it helps that I have a platform bed and therefore did not need a boxspring
I've been without box spring for nearly a decade now. What is it supposed to provide?
I enjoyed shopping at Sleepy's, though I didn't buy there. If you have a chance, check out their k$6 Tempur-Pedic mattress set. It's truly a thing to play with (but not buy, no!).

They might also try Economy Foam, but the Canal St place is much higher quality."
