wiki wiki?

So I think I want a wiki of my very own, to use for personal notetaking.

It'd probably be overkill to download and install MediaWiki, yes?

*sighs* But I LIKE MediaWiki. I've investigated other wiki software in the past, and none has won me over the way MediaWiki has. MediaWiki is pretty, and powerful. Most other wiki apps are FUG-LY ( Read more... )

PMWiki has some pretty themes, too. MediaWiki's pretty straightforward, though.

So explain... what would you use a personal wiki for? I know you said "notetaking", but what do you mean by that? Like writing your shopping list at work so you can access it at home?

Yeah, I'm brain dead and mourning the Bears' loss and trying to wrap my mind around this one. And it sounds just geeky enough that I;m contemplating it too, now that you've mentioned it.

Yeah, pretty much. Mostly I want a wiki because I'm playing this investigative puzzle type thingy (I'll be posting about it later) and I want a place to jot down notes and gather thoughts. But it'll also be useful for other things--like writing down shopping lists. :)

Here, I threw together a couple of quick pages so you can get an idea:

I'm going to end up using a different wiki software for mine, but PBwiki is the best hosted wiki I've come across so far. It does have bugs, but it doesn't make me want to run screaming from its ugliness or horrible markup language.

One nice things about wikis is that they are collaborative, so you could share one with your kids and use it to write notes to each other.

I don't think this is what you're really looking for, but in the meantime, have you tried Google Notebook? It's, well, an internet notebook. It's got some cool features, though it also has a few ease-of-use issues. Might be worth a look, though. I like it, anyway.

MediaWiki would certainly be a useful bit of software to claim you have experience with on your resume, though it might take a bit of explaining that you have experience with installing and maintaining it rather than "I've updated Wikipedia" :-)
