Chapter Three: You’re the One That I Need; I’m the One That You Loathe

"What the . . . ? . . . Shit. Am I being scammed? Is Gerard in on this, too? C’mon, Gerard, show me the hidden camera . . . " Ray cajoled. His tone echoed through the room. ". . . Gerard?" Helena flushed angrily. She slapped him, open fist, across the face and Ray’s hand flew to his crimson cheek. "Geez, lady, what was that for?"

"You are not being scammed. And you will address me as Mistress and I will be called only by that. Got it?" Ray nodded helplessly. "Good." She tilted his head up with a slender finger and studied his face, ignoring his obvious fear. "You will make a good leader." She announced decisively, noting his strong limbs. A door slammed and their supernatural senses could tell it was Gerard, hear his breathing, resist his smell.

"Hello, Ray."

---

"He took that considerably well." Helena remarked some time later.

"He’s very adaptable." Gerard replied. She nodded.

"I assigned him to a new unit." Gerard raised an eyebrow.

"You think he can handle it?"

"I have confidence in him. Just look how you turned out." She said, and they both grinned a little. "I’m taking you out tonight." She said suddenly. Gerard was surprised; sure, she had been softer with him, but taking him out? Why did show him so much favor?

"Where are we going?"

"You’ll see."

---

". . . I swear!" Mikey vowed. Lindsey sighed, her head in her hands gloomily.

"It’ll pass." She said with another sigh.

"What?" Mikey protested.

"Gerard, he, he goes through . . . phases. Such as the phase where he would not sleep anywhere besides the bathtub. Then the phase where he would only listen to old Motown records. That was a toughie. And of course, the peanut butter phase." Lindsey shook her head, worn out.

"What’s the peanut butter phase?"

"You don’t want to know." Mikey blinked. "What I’m saying is that he’ll get over it. I know him and I know how he is and it’ll be over before you know it."

"You sure?"

"Darling. I know." Lindsey confided sagely. Mikey chuckled. "What?"

"You’re so full of bullshit."

"What did you just say?"

"With all due respect," Mikey began, unable to keep the dryness out of his tone. " I think I know him just a little bit better than you, having been his brother for more than twenty-five years, don’t you think?" Lindsey didn’t respond. I mean, sure they’d squabbled and had their fair share of arguments, but Mikey wasn’t the type to just be mean like that. Perhaps it was naive’, but she hadn’t seen what he’d seen. How could she know? "And I know this isn’t one of his phases. I’m not certain what he is, but I think we both know that he isn’t the same as he was yesterday. Whether he be a human, a serial killer, a unicorn, what-the-fuck-ever." It was Lindsey’s turn to laugh humorlessly. "What, you don’t believe me?

"Oh, I didn’t say that. I just think you may have had a little too much to drink tonight." Mikey huffed.

"Fine. Play it that way. Denial isn’t the way to go, doll. You can live in that state of mind forever, but eventually, it’s going to come back and bite you in the ass. In our case, that bite will come in the form of him killing you. So don’t blame me when he comes back and decides you’re next. Oh wait, you won’t be able to, because you’ll be DEAD!" Lindsey turned her back to him and she heard the door slam furiously.

Oh, Gerard. I hope you’re safe. She thought, full of hope. I still love you, even though you could be a serial killer who may or may not murder me. I hear Cassidy’s dead. Bitch deserved it.

---

"Are we there yet?" Gerard asked for the umpteenth time.

"Almost, now stop asking. You sound like an impatient child."

"Sorry." He apologized, staring at his new shoes. She took his hand and squeezed it, letting him know she forgave him. They turned the corner into an alley.

"We’re here." Helena said softly. They stepped into another abandoned building, abandoned no longer. Gerard looked out at a sea of people dressed in black uniforms. He saw Ray, also in a uniform, beaming with pride. Gerard began to feel uncomfortable at the stares of the faces; they seemed to be dissecting him with their eyes. "Meet the Black Parade, Gerard. What do you think?"

"What are they doing? He asked, bewildered.

"Kneeling."

"I see that. Why?"

"Because Gerard, they know you’re their leader."

"I am?"

"Yes. You are." She hugged his arm and looked up into his face, which continued to bear a confused expression. "You are," She repeated, in an uncharacteristically soft tone. There was a sudden disturbance from outside. Helena released Gerard and let her senses go to work. The room was eerily still. "Do you smell that?" Helena was suspicious, turning back toward Gerard, who inhaled deeply.

"Bob and Mikey." He mused. Ray’s eyes lit up.

"Friends of yours and Ray’s?" Helena inquired. Gerard just nodded gravely. "Why don’t the two of you go out there and have some . . . fun." She offered sinisterly. Ray couldn’t contain himself, jumping with joy, nearly wetting his uniform. Helena’s glare, however, reduced his excitement to a mere smile.

"No." Gerard muttered distantly. Ray frowned and Helena cocked an eyebrow.

"Are you sure? All right, it’s your call."

"I want to do this alone."

---

"Bob, are you okay?" Mikey called down to the fallen Bob. They had been perched on a window ledge, looking into the building’s interior. "Here, take my hand and I’ll pull you up." Mikey suggested. After many grunts and groans from the two of them- Bob wasn’t as light as he seemed and Mikey not as strong as he seemed. In addition, Bob had a splitting headache from banging his head against the wall many times. Although, Mikey had successfully gotten Bob back onto the ledge. "Hey! There’s Ray!" Mikey exclaimed. Bob spotted Ray among many other people, looking solemn, and Bob was unable to control his laughter."What?"

"Ray’s hair looks funny." Mikey glared at him. Bob frowned."Where’s Gerard?"

"What do you mean? He’s right there, in the . . . Oh, shit." They simultaneously turned around. Gerard’s sharp, enlarged canine teeth, often mistaken for fangs, glinted with venom in the moonlight.

"What do we do now?" Bob asked between his teeth.

"Run." They leapt off the ledge and broke into a sprint, screaming like little girls, Gerard not far behind. In the heat of the chase, Bob tripped over his feet. "BOB!" Mikey yelled.

"GO! Save yourself!" Bob called melodramatically.

"NO! I won’t go without you!"

"Go, you idiot!" Bob shouted. Mikey ran, looking back only once to see Gerard over Bob, to hear Bob’s earsplitting screams.

When he arrived at Frank’s, Mikey rang the doorbell insistently until Frank finally answered.

"Where’s the fire, Mike?" Mikey began to ramble incoherently, with Frank nodding knowingly every so often. Mikey concluded with a helpless sigh. "So you’re saying Gerard is a vampire slash serial killer slash unicorn and he’s turning people into evil vampires because he was seduced by the ringleader of this giant clan of evil vampires and he turned Bob and Ray and you think we’re next?"

"Yes! Except for the unicorn part." Mikey was breathless and still startled by the image of Gerard’s face near Bob’s, the image that wouldn’t go away.

"So what should we do?"

"I think our best bet is Lindsey’s. I don’t think he’ll be paying her a visit anytime soon." Frank nodded and they began to quickly and cautiously make their way to Lindsey’s place.

---

"Gerard," Helena sounded pleased. Good. Gerard preferred her good moods to her not so favorable ones. She was more pleasant. Although, her kisses were more powerful when she was angry. "you have remarkable friends!" Gerard smiled; her delight was as pure as a child’s. It felt so natural to kiss her right then, and after all, Gerard didn’t have time for remorse. He kissed her hungrily but she remained in control, deciding how deep she wanted to lose herself in the moment. An idea popped into Gerard’s head and he turned toward the door. "Where are you going, dear?"

"To find a friend." Gerard answered cryptically.
