Charles/Erik, 17th century witch hunt, possible homophobia, violence, torture, dehumanization

It's the 17th century and witch hunts abound.
Erik sees his powers as an abomination and is afraid of being accused of witchcraft though he secretly thinks he's evil and deserves whatever's coming. Charles, a fellow villager, tries to show Erik that his powers are in no way evil and are more like a gift, but Erik still struggles to accept himself and refuses to really practice with his powers.
Then Charles is accused of witchcraft (maybe homosexuality too?) and maybe he's put on trial or tortured or sentenced to death.
I want to see how Erik deals with growing up thinking he's evil and self-hating, how he reacts to Charles and the other villagers, etc.
Feel free to put in other characters and pairings. Happy or sad ending, whatever floats your boat.

For the first time, shouldering his way through the crowd, Erik knows what it is to be a mind reader. He can feel the hate that slides from them like fog across a moor. The snatched words in the air - "filth!" "Blasphemer," "Sodomite" - are just extensions of their single, united minds. He tries to squeeze past the farrier, who took him in and found him a job after he first staggered into this village off the barge, with no money or hope, hiding his past and his faith. The farrier gives him a brotherly nod, drawing Erik into the conspiracy, and pushes a stone into his hand

Omggggggg I am crying so hardddd. This is short, but so, so, so intense. You managed to imply so much, hardly spelling it out, like Erik's faith, and every line killed me and it's so beautiful and so hurtful and nluuhonhnh.
Thanks for this, anon. Gonna go read it again and again like a big masochist, now.
