I like the overall design. Very clean and easy to look at. The only thing I don't particularly like is the lack of contrast between the colors in the stripy background. I think I'd like it more if the burgundy stood out just a little more from the dark gray.
And I agree that the professional side of the site needs... something. I'm drawing a blank at what though. I can definitely see why it's giving you problems.
The problem with the dark stripes is that when they look the way I want them to on my monitor, which is an LCD, they appear too bright on CRT monitors. They're pretty much too dark to see on my monitor too. The last set of stripes I had was perfect on the LCD monitor but Ken said they looked way too distracting on monitors that make them appear brighter.

I understand the need for some kind of portal/entrance, but the lack of content on a splash page isn't fun for spiders and the extra click for lazy viewers means there's a chance they won't return to your site since it requires more brain power... sad but unfortunately true =(
Outside of that, I love the darker stripes... I usually associate light/clean/no-frills designs with corporations (professional) type sites but in this case, the darker reminds me of pinstripes which ultimately reminds me of like sexy business people... heh;
But that's just me and my ghetto brain T_T
All in all, portfolios for private or public viewing need to get to the point - display and showcase your lovely art. That's what it's all about and that's what I'd love to see when I first view your site.

Do you have an alternative suggestion for the splash page? Honestly it would be great if there were a way to get rid of it, because splash pages on other people's pages tend to just make me angry. Well, I guess that's only if there's only one link on the page, it makes sense when they have different versions of their website (like flash and non-flash versions).
So...I'm thinking about sticking with the dark colors all around and saving the light-colored scheme for ...hmm, I don't know what O_o; A shop?

hmm, the only alternatives I have for a splash page is to drop it or put real content on it. Like a preview to your work, with words and lots of title/alt tags.
and the pink stripes for a shop would be really cute... what are you gunna sell?
I think the dark stripes look more 'professional', but that's just me. They show up on my screen as dark grey and burgandy. The white/pink look very cutesy and sweet. Would be good for a shop. The splash page needs... something. Not sure what. All in all, good design, though. Very pleasing to the eye.
