*HUGS* I am so sorry to hear that! This sounds like one of those insurmountable problems that just seems worse and worse. But you gotta know it's not your fault! It was a hit and run, and you were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Had it been your own car, which already had troubles, who knows how much worse it could have been. The pain comes from the pressure laid down on your guys, and I am so miffed at your husband's company on your behalf. To force him to pay it all upfront just seems harsh.
I really hope that everything works out, and that if he doesn't get to stay working there, that he finds a job that he enjoys. I'm sending good vibes to you and your family. You're an amazing mother! Don't forget that!
