The riddle

Aug 09, 2008 00:02

We used this puzzle back home as a sort of benchmark challenge on who's a quick thinker.

Imagine a 100-meter vertical cliff.
On top of the cliff there is a tree.
In the middle, at 50-meter mark there is a small rock a human can stand on, and another tree on that rock.
You stand on top of the cliff. You have a 75-meter rope, and a knife you can cut the rope with. You can attach the rope to trees. Rope will hold your weight. Get down to the bottom of the cliff.

This is a mathematical puzzle.
You can't fall more than a negligible distance. You can't put sudden strain on the rope -- it'll break, so no playing Tarzan.
You are not a professional climber, you don't know any fancy knots etc. You can tie basic ones, but nothing of the kind "if I shake the rope at the bottom, it'll untie itself at the top".

It took me about 20-30 minutes.
It took khaoos about 5 (with small help from sinelnikoff).
It took my dad about 1-2 hours.
