I thought I was the only childhood TMer around! My dad was very much into TM and took me to learn the practice when I was very young. We would go on retreats together and I still treasure a week we spent in Iowa. My mom and brother were bemused by us but tolerant. I heard of the Maharishi's passing earlier today and oddly, perhaps because it ignited some of those memories of my dad (gone over 20 years now).
I haven't meditated for years, but my memories of all the TM folk we met are good ones.
Well, I was born in 1974. My parents had been involved with TM for, probably, five years before my birth, so, when I turned five, I learned the basic "walking meditation" that they use for small children. When I was thirteen, I "graduated" to the grown-up version, was given a new mantra, and so forth.
I actually learned TM just before I turned 18 (about 7 years before you were born) when Maharishi was first in Boston. I got to see him in person, sitting cross-legged on the stage in orange robes, surrounded by lots of flowers. He was full of joy - joy bubbled right out of him! I said to myself, "I don't know what it is, but I want some - and if meditation will get me there, I'll do it!" I no longer use that method of meditation, but have been meditating in some form ever since. I am very grateful for the journey that was opened for me by Maharishi in the late 1960's.
BTW - felis_sidus is a TM instructor. She was your instructor when you were a child, as well as your sister's. She has give our family many spiritual gifts.
