The scrape of a trunk and the indignant squawk of a budgie as it was jostled in its cage announced the arrival of one of the latest batch of new students at the desk now piled high with papers and entire stacks of forms. The secretary barely looked up at his dazed "Er, hi," and just took his forms when he managed to find them in the jumbled mess that had been a schoolbag in a past life.

"Potter, Harry?" They waited for his nod before passing over an ID card and a room key. He'd managed a curious glance at the teacher at the other end of the counter before the thwack of a student guidebook next to his hand made him jump. "Take a moment to read through that before you leave."

Lily barely noticed the noise--it wasn't until she heard the name that she looked up, wide-eyed, at the boy who was now in the room with her. Potter, Harry. Harry. Her son. She'd had a plan in mind for their reunion, but it all seemed distant when she actually got a look at the boy who had been an infant what seemed like moments before. He looked so much like his father, she could see every little bit in him, and his green eyes, she noted with a bit of pride, never had faded out.

She felt tears, and pushed them back. "Harry!" She wrapped the boy in a hug without much else thought.

Harry had just tucked his key into the pocket of his jeans when he was pulled into a hug with no warning other than a blur of red hair. His initial thought went something along the lines of Ron was right, American teachers really are crazy. Luckily, the faint feeling of familiarity coupled with a sudden, surprisingly pain-free pulse of psychic energy from his scar was enough to stop him making any attempt to escape the circle of her arms.

But still.

"... Sorry, do I know you?" He wished he'd gotten a proper look at her face; anyone who wanted to hug him had to be important. Too important not to know.

Oh, she must have startled the poor boy--and it looked like he didn't recognize her. Had Dumbledore told him she would be there? It was something she could see Dumbledore not mentioning directly. She pulled back, hands still resting on her son's shoulders, to take a closer look at him. So much like his father when he was a boy, it was amazing. Although he sounded a bit more polite than James had been.

"I--" She stopped, swallowed the lump in her throat. "I'm Lily. Your mother."

That probably raised more questions than it answered. But one thing at a time.
