When he arrived back at the Institute from Mexico, Derrick's head was spinning. It wasn't just from the implications of the Darkness or the weariness from but also the fact that he had gotten the glowy things to do something besides hover by him and give him painful shocks. He did something with them!
The glimpse of control disappeared once he was back though. Derrick practiced and only got his usual result. Nothing. He kept trying and trying, making more and more of the glowy things as he listened to the music... only to suddenly have a wave of silence wash over him. Derrick found himself on the floor with a room half filled with hovering bright spheres and missing an hour's worth of time. Somehow, he wobbled back to his dorm room despite how heavy he felt and how his body shook with each step. Then, he collapsed on his bed. What had happened?
Now a few days later, Derrick was still in his bed under the covers, going in and out of consciousness. The one time the insomniac could easily fall asleep, his sleeping wasn't very restful or doing much to make him feel better. Time passing did seem to help. He could now stay awake longer if he wanted, and not wanting to worry his roommate, he made sure to whenever Allen was around. This could appear like a cold, he hoped.
Derrick wiggled his way deeper under his bed sheets, pressed his head against his pillow, and tried to will the strange ache away. Then he fell asleep instantly.
