Hanabi was curious to see how her cousin was faring. She approached the hedge maze, wearing a warm sweater and a light coat over that for warmth, greeting Neji with a small smile. She was about to speak in English, but reminded herself that it would be nicer to speak to him in Japanese. After all, he'd get immersed in the English language enough by having to take classes in it.

"Hello, Neji-niisan," she greeted. "How do you like it here so far?"

She took a seat near him, but not so close that she'd see what his insides looked like. Although she was starting to get a handle on how to shut that part of her powers off, it was unreliable. The most she'd managed consistently so far was being able to adjust the distance where she'd see the internal structures of people and things. She couldn't fully turn the ability off yet, but it was nice to be able to converse with someone without having to stay more than three feet away at all times.

Neji looked up when she spoke. "Hello, Hanabi-chan." Even though he knew his eyes were the same, it was still odd to see the white-on-white. "Would you like the polite answer or the truth?" he answered with a sigh, and closed his book. Like Hanabi, he wore his clothes in layers to better adjust to the temperature of wherever he was. The exceptions being his hands. Unless he was skiing or snowboarding, he didn't like to wear gloves.

"You might as well tell me the truth," said Hanabi. "I can't help if you tell small lies for the sake of politeness."

There was a lot to like about the school, in Hanabi's opinion, but she understood how jarring it was to suddenly find oneself here, and could only imagine it being worse to have come all the way from Japan.

"It's all rather alien. Wearing your shoes indoors and outdoors, for one. All these little cultural things." He took a breath, more for calm than anything. He could feel a rant building, and he didn't want to take it out on his cousin. At the same time, she would be someone who could understand. "It helps my roommate, Urameshi Yuusuke, is Japanese, but he's...a delinquent. I don't know if you chanced to see his video feed the other day.

"If nothing else, it has been more practice for my written English. Getting the hang of speaking it and understanding it spoken back to me is harder as everyone speaks so fast." He looked away to glare at the ground in annoyed self-recrimination. "It doesn't help, either, that I can't pronounce some of the letter-sounds. Oh, I can approximate them, but my accent is apparently thick enough to confuse people about what I'm saying." Or trying to say.It could be worse. If his father hadn't insisted he keep in contact with his cousins, and if Neji and Hanabi hadn't discovered mutual interests ( ... )
